Navicula carinifera Grunow View in CoL in Schmidt et al. (1874: pl. 2, fig. 1) ( Figs 46–48 View FIGURES 38–51 )

References: Schmidt et al. 1874, pl. 2, fig. 1; Hendey 1964, pl. 31, fig.11, Stidolph et al. 2012, pl. 16, fig. 78.

Features: Length 63–89 μm, width 24–25 μm, striae 12–18 in 10 μm.

Description: Valves broadly lanceolate with sub-rostrate apices. Raphe branches straight, ending centrally in simple pores. Axial area narrow, raised below apices, central area small and transapically dilated. Transapical striae monoseriate formed by rounded areolae, slightly radiate throughout.

Remarks: Navicula carinifera can be distinguished by the raised parts of the axial area above and below the central area towards the apices.

Ecology and Distribution: A widely distributed marine species. Not reported previously from the Gulf. Frequent in Basra corals.
