Type material. Lectotype designated herein: KM Inv. No. F /1129, SL: 47.1 mm, MD: 17.9 mm, Maigen ( Austria), illustrated in Schaffer (1912a, pl. 49, fig. 18), figs 42D 1 –D 2 . Paralectotypes: KM Inv. No. F/1130, SL: 26.4 mm , MD: 11.6 mm, Maigen ( Austria), illustrated in Schaffer (1912a, pl. 49, fig. 19), figs 42E ; KM Inv. No , F/1131 SL: 29.8 mm , MD: 12.5 mm, Maigen ( Austria), illustrated in Schaffer (1912a, pl. 49, fig. 20) .
Revised description. Shell moderately large, moderately broad fusiform with conical spire and high last whorl; apical angle ~40°. Protoconch and early teleoconch whorls not preserved. Early spire whorls weakly concave with weakly swollen subsutural collar and spiral row of broad, low, slightly opisthocline beads along suprasutural cord. Beads fading out on later teleoconch whorls. Entire shell covered by low, flat spiral cords separated by narrow interspaces. Suture indistinct, narrowly impressed. Last whorl 65% of total height, ovoid; subsutural collar rounded, weakly developed. Subsutural ramp of medium width, concave, poorly delimited by somewhat inflated, rounded shoulder marking periphery, convex below. Base weakly delimited, slightly angular, moderately constricted.Aperture narrowly pyriform. Outer lip incomplete. Anal sinus modertately wide and deep, asymmetrically U-shaped, with apex mid-ramp. Siphonal canal long, narrow, straight with weakly notched tip.
Discussion. This species was established by Schaffer (1912a) as subspecies of Perrona semimarginata auctores [= Tomellana aueri nov. sp.], but differs from that species greatly in its shorter spire, wider apical angle, fewer teleoconch whorls, and the presence of a row of suprasutural beads. Tomellana praecursor is reminiscent of Tomellana dulaii nov. sp., from the Badenian of Nemeşeşti ( Romania) in general shape, but differs in its beaded suprasutural cord, weaker subsutural collar and shorter siphonal canal.
Paleoenvironment. The occurrence at Maigen ( Austria) suggests a preference for inner neritic environments with sandy bottoms (own data).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Eggenburgian (early Miocene): North Alpine Foreland Basin: St. Gallen ( Switzerland) (Rutsch, 1926), Kaltenbachgraben ( Germany) ( Hölzl 1958); North Alpine-Carpathian Foreland Basin: Fels am Wagram, Maigen ( Austria) (Steiniger 1963), Eastern Mátra Mountains: Darnó-hill ( Hungary) ( Fözy & Leél-Össy 1985a, b); Dacian Basin: Crivienni-Pătârlagele ( Romania) ( Ionesi & Nicorici 1994).
