Type material. Holotype: M.60.145, Szokolya ( Hungary), SL: 34 mm, MD: 11.3 mm, illustrated in Báldi (1960, pl. 3, figs 6a–b), stored in the Hungarian Natural History Museum , Budapest ( Hungary), fig. 28C, 4D . Additional studied material. M.70.619, Rendek-völgyi quarry, Borsodbóta ( Hungary), holotype of Clavatula (Surcula) nodosa borsodensis Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1969 , stored in the Hungarian Natural History Museum , Budapest ( Hungary) .
Revised description. Shell medium-sized, solid with high, conical spire. Protoconch paucispiral, poorly preserved, high conical. Teleoconch of at least eight whorls. Early teleoconch whorls with two prominent adsutural spiral rows of rounded beads separated by narrow concavity. Abapically mid-portion widening, suprasutural beads slightly larger, forming periphery; weak spiral cords covering entire whorl. On fifth whorl subsutural row of beads weakens, cord swells to form subsutural collar. Suprasutural beads strengthen and become tubercles. Spiral cords becoming more prominent covering collar and suprasutural tubercles. Suture narrowly incised, running below beads. Last whorl 55% of total height. Subsutural collar narrow, low, poorly delimited. Subsutural ramp concave, delimited by row of rounded tubercles, convex below, strongly constricted at base. Fasciole poorly delimited. Spiral sculpture of fine threads on collar and ramp, below shoulder with narrow cords of roughly alternate strength extending to fasciole. Peribasal cord slightly more prominent.Aperture and outer lip incomplete.Anal sinus moderately deep and wide, symmetrically U-shaped, with apex on adapical half of ramp. Siphonal canal long, narrow, recurved at tip. Columella straight to weakly twisted, smooth.
Discussion. Despite the fragmentary preservation, this species is well-defined by its two prominent adsutural cords of relatively large beads on early whorls. ‘ Clavatula ’ orientoromana Báldi, 1960 is superficially reminiscent of ‘ Clavatula ’ romana ( Defrance, 1826) , from the Pliocene of Italy, but differs in its much higher spire and the comparatively smooth subsutural collar on later teleoconch whorls. Moreover, ‘ C. ’ orientoromana differs in its neanic whorl sculpture being composed of two adsutural beaded cords separated by a smooth mid-whorl, as opposed to a tripartite sculpture in ‘ C. ’ romana , which is herein considered part of the mystica -clade. ‘ Clavatula ’ orientoromana differs from Clavatula in its more slender fusiform shell and from the bimarginata -clade in not having axial riblets at mid-whorl.
The early Miocene ‘ Clavatula ’ mariae ( Hoernes & Auinger, 1891) has a tripartite sculpture on early teleoconch whorls, less conical whorls, and a less constricted base. ‘ Clavatula ’ boreoromana Kautsky, 1925, from the early Miocene of the North Sea, agrees with ‘ C. ’ orientoromana in its general shape with a high spire, but has slightly opisthocline beads and coarser spiral cords (see Kautsky 1925: 154, pl. 10, figs 28–29). The Egerian (Chattian/ Aquitanian) ‘ Clavatula ’ danuvii Vicián, Kovács & Stein, 2019, from Hungary, lacks prominent beads (see Vicián et al. 2019, 256. pl. 5, figs 19–20).
Kovács & Vicián (2021) recognized Clavatula (Surcula) nodosa borsodensis Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1969 as subjective junior synonym of Clavatula orientoromana , which is followed herein.
Paleoenvironment. The fauna from Szokolya ( Hungary) corresponds to that of the basinal clays of the Baden Formation in the Vienna Basin, which formed in middle to outer neritic environments ( Kranner et al. 2021).
