Type material. Holotype: M.61.4367, Szentkút, Mátraverebély ( Hungary), SL: 22.0 mm, MD: 8.1 mm, holotype of Clavatula vindobonensis nodosa Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1954 , illustrated in Csepreghy-Meznerics (1954, pl. 7, figs 8–9), stored in the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest ( Hungary); figs 31F 1 –F 2, 4Q.

Type locality. Mátraverebély ( Hungary), Pannonian Basin.

Type stratum. Shallow marine sand silt of the Sámsonháza Formation ( Dulai & Moissette 2007).

Age. Early/middle Badenian (Langhian).

Etymology. In honor of Ilona Csepreghyné Meznerics (1906–1977), pioneer of Paratethyan mollusc paleontology.

Revised description. Shell medium-sized, moderately slender fusiform with weakly gradate spire and subcylindrical whorls; apical angle 36°. Protoconch not preserved. Teleoconch of nine whorls. Early teleoconch whorls flat-sided with two narrow adapical spiral cords with opisthocline, comma-shaped axial riblets. Suprasutural spiral cord indistinctly beaded by abapical tips of riblets. Sculpture changing on fourth and fifth whorl; subsutural cord swelling into rounded, sharply-delimited, weakly tuberculose subsutural collar, axial riblets at mid-whorl and suprasutural row of beads disappear, five narrow, flattened spiral cords develop below collar, separated by deep, narrow grooves; grooves becoming shallower towards abapical suture. Suture superficial, slightly undulating. Last whorl ~ 65% of total height; subsutural collar broad, bearing round to pointed tubercles, sharply delimited. Broad subsutural ramp weakly concave, poorly delimited by low-set, rounded shoulder, base poorly delimited, moderately constricted. Siphonal fasciole weakly swollen, twisted. Sculpture of narrow, flattened cords separated by deep grooves on ramp, obsolete at mid-whorl, strengthening again below shoulder, extending over base and fasciole. Aperture narrowly pyriform. Outer lip not preserved. Anal sinus wide, moderately deep, asymmetrically U-shaped, with apex at mid-ramp. Siphonal canal moderately long and wide, straight, with shallowly notched tip. Columella obscured by sediment.

Discussion. This species was established by Csepreghy-Meznerics (1954) as Clavatula vindobonensis nodosa . This name, however, is a secondary homonym of the Italian Pleurotoma nodosa Bellardi, 1847 , which is currently placed in Clavatula by Ferrero Mortara et al. (1981) and Zunino & Pavia (2009). Therefore, we propose Perrona ilonae as new name for the Hungarian species.

The holotype is a relatively slender specimen with rounded beads. Additional specimens from Herend ( Hungary), illustrated by Strausz (1966) and Kókay (1966) are slightly broader than the holotype and document considerable variability of sculpture with pointed to spinose nodes at the subsutural collar. All specimens display the characteristic spiral grooves below the subsutural collar. Perrona ilonae is highly reminiscent of Perrona vindobonensis (Quenstedt, 1884) and at first sight it could be an extreme morphotype. Typical specimens of P. ilonae bear prominent, pointed beads on the subsutural collar whereas Perrona vindobonensis lacks beads or spines. In P. ilonae the spiral cords are separated by narrow, deeply incised grooves, whereas P. vindobonensis has wider and shallow interspaces. Both species might also have been ecologically separated. Perrona ilonae lived on coastal mudflats, whereas P. vindobonensis preferred sandy bottoms with seagrass.

Perrona coppii ( Bellardi, 1877) , from the Tortonian of Stazzano ( Italy), differs by its beaded basal and peribasal spiral cords (see Ferrero Mortara et al. 1981, pl. 14, figs 8a–b).

Paleoenvironment. Kókay (1966) described this species from coastal mudflats. Similar conditions are indicated at St. Florian ( Austria), where Perrona ilonae co-occurs with potamidid gastropods.
