Revised description. Shell medium-sized, solid, stocky, with strongly coronate and gradate spire and low cylindrical teleoconch whorls; apical angle ~50°. Protoconch not preserved. Teleoconch of at least seven whorls. Early teleoconch whorls with smooth, prominent, rounded subsutural cord, concave below, covered with fine narrow spiral cords separated by narrow interspaces; weak comma-shaped riblets on early teleoconch whorls. Later teleoconch whorls squat, cylindrical, subsutural cord strengthens to form collar with large, rounded to pointed tubercles, of variable strength and often poorly defined. Suture narrowly but moderately deeply incised, weakly undulating. Last whorl ~ 65% of total height barrel-shaped; subsutural collar strong, coronate, bearing 10–12 tubercles, delimited by weak groove in some specimens. Subsutural ramp broad, shallow, weakly concave, delimited by weak, low-set shoulder cord, placed close below peribasal cord. Base weakly angled, but more so than shoulder. Base moderately constricted, concave. Peribasal cord weakly developed, siphonal fasciole weak, slightly twisted. No further spiral sculpture. Aperture moderately wide, pyriform. Outer lip not thickened, smooth within. Anal sinus deep, moderately wide, asymmetrically U-shaped, with apex just below subsutural collar. Siphonal canal moderately long, wide, slightly deflected, shallowly notched at tip. Columella strongly excavated in adapical half, slightly twisted at fasciole, smooth. Columellar and parietal callus slightly thickened, sharply delimited, forming broad callus rim.
Discussion. Perrona lousiae ( Hoernes & Auinger, 1891) is characterized by its broad, strongly gradate and strongly coronate spire, squat barrel-shaped whorls, and the absence of spiral sculpture on later adult whorls, apart from the major cords. It resembles Perrona descendens ( Hilber, 1879) in general shape, but the latter has a narrower spire angle, higher spire whorls and lacks pointed tubercles. The same features distinguish P. lousiae from Perrona vindobonensis (Quenstedt, 1884) , Perrona ilonae nov. sp. and P. sabinae ( Hoernes & Auinger, 1891) .
Paleoenvironment. The occurrence at Weinsteig suggests a preference for lagoonal environments with mudflats ( Harzhauser et al. 2002; own data).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Karpatian (early Miocene): Korneuburg Basin: Grossrussbach, Kleinebersdorf, Karnabrunn, Rückersdorf, Wetzleinsdorf, Weinsteig ( Austria) (Harzhauser 2002); North AlpineCarpathian Foreland Basin: Niederkreuzstetten ( Austria) (Harzhauser 2002, 2003); Badenian (middle Miocene): North Alpine Foreland Basin: Grund ( Austria) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1891); Vienna Basin: Gainfarn ( Austria) (hoc opus); Pannonian Basin: Herend ( Hungary) ( Kókay 1966).
Occurrences from the Ottnangian (early Miocene) of Kaltenbachgraben in Germany, reported by Steininger (1973) will need confirmation.
