Frenulina sanguinolenta (Gmelin, 1791)

This is a very widely distributed species, known from Japan, China and Australia to French Polynesia and Hawaii ( Thomson 1918; Dall 1920; Jackson & Stiasny 1937; Hatai 1940; Richardson 1973 a, b, 1979; Zezina 1985; Emig 1987; Richardson et al. 1989; Saito 1996; Laurin 1997; Bitner 2006a, b, 2008; Logan 2007), and New Caledonia and the Norfolk Ridge (d’Hondt 1987; Laurin 1997; Bitner 2007a). Frenulina sanguinolenta is easily recognizable by its red colour pattern. It was found on three seamounts ( Tables 1, 2), occurring in abundance on Antigonia whereas only single, dead shells were obtained from Crypthelia and Munida. It is known only from relatively shallow water (180–373 m; Fig. 14 ).
