34. Simulium (Gomphostilbia) burtoni Takaoka & Davies, 1995 View in CoL

Simulium (Gomphostilbia) burtoni Takaoka & Davies, 1995: 72 View in CoL –77 (Female, male, pupa and larva).

This species was described from females, males, pupae and larvae collected in Peninsular Malaysia (Takaoka and Davies, 1995). It is similar to S. varicorne View in CoL but is distinguished from the latter species in the female by abdominal segments 2 and 5–8 shiny, in the male by the ventral plate moderately produced ventrally, in the pupa by the gill filaments arranged as (3+3)+2 from dorsal to ventral, and terminal hooks widened, and in the larva by the absence of dorsal protuberances on the abdomen.

The pupae and larvae were collected from small streams at low elevations in Janda Baik.

This species was recorded from Thailand ( Takaoka and Choochote, 2004a). Females and males reared from pupae collected in Thailand show that the female tibiae of the mid and hind legs each bear a small subbasal dark spot, the tergite of female abdominal segment 5 is shiny, and the male antenna shows the same color pattern as that of the female antenna, which is darkened on flagellomeres 3 and 5–8 and yellow on the other flagellomers. The shiny tergite of abdominal segment 5 was confirmed when the holotype female was reexamined.
