Reduvius carinatus Fabricius, 1798 View in CoL

Original data: “Habitat in Carolina Mus. Dom. Bosc” ( Fabricius 1798: 545).

Type: Lectotype ♀, designated by Willemse (1985: 58): “ HOLOTYPE ” // “ R. Carinatus h. in Carolina fab” [hw Bosc] // “Gre Sirthenea de Spinola ” // “P.” // “MUSEUM PARIS Coll. Bosc.” // “ Sirthenea stria carinata (F.) Det. L. Willemse 1982” [hw Willemse] ( Fig. 62 View FIGURE 62 ).

Type locality: Carolina [old name of North Carolina, America] .

Current status: Sirthenea stria carinata ( Fabricius, 1798) View in CoL (combination proposed by Willemse 1985: 57).

Remarks: Fabricius (1798: 545) described Reduvius carinatus without designating a holotype or mentioning the number of specimens studied; the original description neither implies nor requires that there were more than one syntypes. Zimsen (1964: 337) recorded the type material of this species as “ Reduvius carinatus Ent. Syst. Suppl. p. 545 · 36 »in Carolina Mus. Dom. Bosc«. (Syst. Rhyng. p. 278 · 57)—Paris 1 specimen ”. Unfortunately, the Bosc collection did not remain in its original condition after its arrival at MNHN in 1828. It was dismantled and the specimens were scattered in other boxes of the general collection. So, we cannot know if there were one or more specimens, and this type specimen remains the only known syntype of R. carinatus . This specimen was listed by Willemse (1985: 58) as the holotype, and this act is to be recognized as a valid lectotype designation according to ICZN (1999, Art. 74.6).
