Type locality. Western Iran: Sarfirooz Abdb (Halshi), Paveh County, Kermanshah Province, 34º56' N, 46º27' E, 1663 m a.s.l.

Type material. Holotype female and 9 paratypes (5 females, 4 young specimens), Iran, Kermanshah Province, Sarfirooz Abdb (Halshi), soil and leaf litter of oak jungle, 06.II.2013, Morteza Kahrarian leg. Holotype and 7 paratypes deposited in IAUK, 2 paratypes in JIAP.

Other material, Iran, Kermanshah Province, Eslam Abad-e-Gharb County, Sia Khor Village, 34º07’ N, 46º36’ E, 1442 m a.s.l., grassland soil, 14.V.2013, Morteza Kahrarian leg., 1 female and 1 young specimen. Kermanshah County, Char zabar (Kor Kor Mountain), 34º13’ N, 46º40’ E, 1592 m a.s.l., soil and leaf litter of oak jungle, 15.II.2013, Morteza Kahrarian leg., 1 female. Sar-e-pol-e-Zahab County, Patagh Area, 34º25’ N, 46º01’ E, 1404 m a.s.l., soil and leaf litter of oak jungle, 14.V.2013, Morteza Kahrarian leg., 2 females. Kangavar County, Hassam Abad Village, 34º31’ N, 47º55’ E, 1480 m a.s.l., Forest Plane (Button wood), 14.XII.2012, Morteza Kahrarian leg., 9 females.

Description. Size: 0.75–1.05 mm females (holotype 0.88 mm). Colour: blue greyish; pigment more concentrated in eye fields. Body long and slender ( Fig 1–2 View FIGURES 1 – 2 ). Dorsal chaetae smooth and pointed. SA macrochaeta on Abd IV 0.30–0.35, on Abd V 0.45–0.50 times the tergite length ( Fig 6 View FIGURES 5 – 8 ).

Antennae shorter than cephalic diagonal (10:12–13). Ant IV with about 10 dorsal cylindrical sensilla, a dorsoexternal microsensillum and a subapical pit organ. Sensory organ of Ant III with a pair of small microsensilla and two guard sensilla shorter than surrounding chaetae, one on each side. Another microsensillum found in a ventrolateral location. Ant III with 23 common chaetae. Ant II with a small subcylindrical ventral sensillum and 18 common chaetae, and some of the basal ones short and fine. Ant I with two subcylindrical ventral sensilla and 12 common chaetae; one of the basal chaetae smaller than the others.

Five omma on each side of head. PAO long and narrow, 4.5–5.5 times as long as an omma, with two posterior chaetae ( Fig 9 View FIGURES 9 – 14 ). 2/5,5,4 labral chaetae. Maxillary palp bifurcate with three sublobal hairs.

Dorsal chaetotaxy represented in Figure 1 View FIGURES 1 – 2 . Axial chaetotaxy of Th II-Abd V have 6,4/3,3,3,5,2 pairs of mesochaetae respectively; unpaired axial p-chaeta present on Abd IV. Macrochaetotaxy: 1,1/2,2,3,3,3, M on Abd I and SA on Abd III slightly longer than surrounding chaetae ( Table 2). Microsensillar chaetotaxy: 1,0/0,0,1 ms freely exposed on the body surface. Th II-Abd V with 3,3/2,2,2,2,4 sensilla slender and shorter than surrounding chaetae. The lower pair of sensilla on Abd V is shorter and thicker than the upper pair, set in front of p-row ( Fig 6 View FIGURES 5 – 8 ).

Chaetotaxy of legs I to III: subcoxae I: 1,1,3; subcoxae II: 1,5,5; coxae: 4,8,9; trochanter: 8,8,6; femora: 13,14,14; tibiotarsi: 20,20,22 pointed chaetae respectively. Chaetae A1–A7, B1–B7, C1–C7 and x present on tibiotarsus of leg III. Tibiotarsi of legs I and II with single chaeta B4/5. Claw with no teeth on inner edge. Empodial appendage sharp; its length less than half internal edge of claw.

The retinacle with 3+3 teeth and one chaeta on corpus. Subcoxa of furca with 5–7 chaetae on anterior and 4(5) on posterior part. Furca well developed. Manubrium with 8+8 posterior and no anterior chaetae. Dens with two posterior and no anterior chaetae ( Fig 13 View FIGURES 9 – 14 ). The mucro with two teeth, with a small lateral lamella from base to subapical tooth.

Discussion. Following Fjellberg (1993), Folsomides halshinicus sp. nov. belongs to the species group of Folsomides angularis ( Axelson, 1905) as it has 5+5 omma and dens with mucro. According to reduced number of ms on Th II-Abd III (10/001) this species is related to the subgroup formed by 13 species. Main differences between F. halshinicus sp. nov. and these species are summarized in Table 4 View TABLE 4 . The new species is most similar to F. chichinautzini . They differ in the body length and the dorsal chaetotaxy; 6 axial chaetae on Abd IV in F. chichinautzini vs 5 in the new species; 12233 macrochaetae on Abd I–V in F. chichinautzini (type 2 of Fjellberg 1993, named type 2b by us) vs 22333 in the new species (similar to type 2 of Fjellberg 1993 but M on Abd I and SA on Abd III slightly longer than surrounding chaetae, named type 2a by us).

Etymology. The species has been named after the type locality.
