Leptuca uruguayensis ( Nobili, 1901)

Material examined. Brazil, São Paulo: 2 ♂, CCDB 278 , Ubatuba, Rio Escuro mangrove, coll. F. Mantelatto, 25.viii.1998 ; 1 ♂, CCDB 3512 , Ubatuba, Praia Dura, coll. P. Rocha, 29.viii.1992 ; 2 ♂, CCDB 5275 , Ilha Comprida , beach near ferry station to Cananéia, colls. R. Robles et al., 11.iii.2012 .

Distribution. Western Atlantic—Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, and Argentina (south to Buenos Aires) ( Rathbun 1918; Crane 1975; Bezerra 2012; Masunari et al. 2020).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Ilha Piaçaguera in Cubatão (as “Santos: E. Piassaguera”) ( Rathbun 1918; Crane 1975), São Sebastião ( Luederwaldt 1919a, 1929), Santos ( Luederwaldt 1919b; Crane 1975; Bezerra 2012), Cananéia ( Gerlach 1958), and Ubatuba ( Bezerra 2012). This species presents the most extensive distribution towards south than any other American fiddler crab ( Crane 1975; Bezerra 2012). This species and M. mordax , are the only two with southwards distribution where mangroves do not grow ( Masunari et al. 2020).
