Western Atlantic—USA (North Carolina to Florida), México (Gulf of Mexico), Antilles, Belize, Colombia, Brazil (Abrolhos, Pará, Ceará, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), and Argentina ( Abele & Kim 1986; Griffith 1987; Martins & D’Incao 1996; Melo 1996, 1998, 2008; Bezerra et al. 2006; Young & Serejo 2005; Almeida & Coelho 2008; Pachelle et al. 2016).
