Eastern Atlantic—Guinea to South Africa ( Holthuis 1959; Williams 1965, 1984; Fausto-Filho 1966, 1967; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Powers 1977; Lemaitre 1981; Taissoun 1984; Abele & Kim 1986; Bordin 1987; Moran & Dittel 1993; Souza 1997; Melo et al. 1998; Viana et al. 2003; Almeida et al. 2007a, b; Felder et al. 2009; Melo 2010; Diez & Jover 2015; Mendonça et al. 2019).
Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Ubatuba ( Mantelatto & Fransozo 2000; Bertini et al. 2004, 2010; Bertini & Fransozo 2004; Braga et al. 2005; Fransozo et al. 2012; Mantelatto et al. 2016a; Camargo et al. 2020); Caraguatatuba ( Braga et al. 2005); and Ilhabela (Ilha de São Sebastião, Rathbun 1937 as Hepatus princeps ).
