Western Atlantic—USA (Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Panama, Antilles, Colombia, Guianas, and Brazil (Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina). Eastern Atlantic—Cape Verde to Angola ( Rathbun 1901, 1930; Holthuis 1959; Fausto-Filho 1966; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Powers 1977; Lemaitre 1981; Abele & Kim 1986; Melo et al. 1989; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Almeida et al. 2007b; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009; Lima Júnior et al. 2010; Alves et al. 2012a).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo state include Ubatuba ( Rathbun 1930; Fransozo et al. 1992, 2012; Mantelatto & Fransozo 2000; Bertini & Fransozo 2004; Bertini et al. 2004, 2010; Alves et al. 2012a, b, 2013a; Mantelatto et al. 2016a; Camargo et al. 2020), São Sebastião ( Nucci & Melo 2000), Ilhabela (Ilha de São Sebastião) ( Rathbun 1930; Nucci & Melo 2000), and São Vicente ( Sant’Anna et al. 2012).
