Distribution. Western Atlantic—Costa Rica to Brazil (Abrolhos, Piauí, Maranhão, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Bahia, Alagoas, Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo). Eastern Pacific—Mexico (Lower California) to Chile (Valparaiso) ( Rathbun 1925; Garth 1946; Lemaitre 1981; Retamal 1981; Coelho & Torres 1993; Melo 1996; Hendrickx 1999; Marcano & Bolaños 2001; Young & Serejo 2005; Almeida et al. 2007b; Almeida & Coelho 2008; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo state include Ubatuba ( Hiyodo et al. 1994; Alves et al. 2012b as A. dissimulatus ). This species was previously reported also as Acanthonyx dissimulatus and A. scutiformis ( Tamburus & Mantelatto 2016b) . However, these authors synonymized them to A. petiverii . Sequences accession number (GenBank): CCDB 760—16S ( KC695764 ), COI ( KC695772 ) ( Tamburus & Mantelatto 2016a).
