Symethis variolosa ( Fabricius, 1793) View in CoL

Cancer variolosa Fabricius, 1793: 476 .

Material examined. None.

Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (North Carolina to Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Antilles, Venezuela, and Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Amapá, Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo) ( Rathbun 1937; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Fausto-Filho 1974; Powers 1977; Goeke 1980; Williams 1984; Abele & Kim 1986; Barreto et al. 1993; Melo 1996, 2008; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Almeida & Coelho 2008; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009; Santos et al. 2016).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo do not include the specific locality or analyzed material; this occurrence is based on a bibliographic survey ( Barreto et al. 1993; Dall’Occo et al. 2004). Symethis variolosa is a small species (~ 3mm) found from 20 to 110m ( Williams 1984; Melo 1996, 2008), being difficult to capture it.
