Type species: Hydroniscus abyssi Hansen, 1916 .

Diagnosis. Haploniscidae with pereonites 5–7 fused with pleotelson to form a consolidated robust segment. Cephalon produced into rostral lobe or small conical process. Antenna 2 with article 3 lacking spinous process. Uropods either reduced or absent. Pleotelson either truncated or rounded posteriorly with posterolateral projection small. Body capable of rolling as a round ball.

Remarks. This genus presently includes 10 species, including three new species discovered in this study. Two species are known from the Pacific: H. minutus Birstein, 1971 and H. vitjazi Birstein, 1963 . Seven species are known from the Atlantic: H. abyssi Hansen, 1916 , H. quadrifrons Menzies, 1962 , H. ornatus Menzies, 1962 ,
