CYMBALOPHUS

Cymbalophus is the new generic name applied by Hooker (1984) to Hyracotherium cuniculus ( Owen, 1842) . This taxon is known from only a few specimens in the London, Paris and Belgian Basins. Hooker (1984) described this taxon as a ceratomorph, only later (1989) placing Cymbalophus at the base of the hippomorph radiation. The scoring was based on the description in Hooker (1984) and figures in both Hooker’s description and his 1989 phylogenetic analysis, as well as examination of cast material of the lectotype (BMNH 36569) and BMNH 36494. This analysis eventually demonstrated that this OTU represents a basal perissodactyl rather than an equid.
