Tribe Apiomerini View in CoL
Currently, there are 12 extant genera in Apiomerini , seven of which are monotypic, among them Calliclopius Stål, 1868 and Sphodrolestes Stål, 1867 ( Gil-Santana et al. 2002, 2003, 2015, Bérenger 2006). Gil-Santana et al. (2003) provided a synopsis of the genera and biology of the group, summarized and updated by Gil-Santana et al. (2015) who also presented a key to their genera. With the exception of Apiomerus Hahn,1831 which has several Neartic species as well, other Apiomerini are exclusively Neotropical in distribution ( Froeschner 1988, Maldonado 1990, Gil-Santana et al. 2003, 2015, Bérenger 2006, Berniker et al. 2011).
Besides the aposematism, as commented above, several species of different genera of Apiomerini join in diverse mimicry systems, in which a general dark body coloration is combined with reddish or pale markings on the midportion of hemelytra (Gil-Santana et al. 2003).
