Remarks. The nomenclature of Lybia H. Milne Edwards, 1834 (= Melia Berthold, 1827 ) has been discussed at length by Ng et al. (2008: 22, 23). The genus currently contains 10 species (Ng et al. 2008) but requires a revision as not all the species have been well defined. Guinot (1976) noted that Lybia could be divided into three distinct morphological groups, and presented several characters that could be useful in elucidating the relationships among the different species in the genus, such as the outline of the carapace, and condition of the endostome, lacinia of the first maxillipeds, male thoracic sternum, male abdomen and G1 (see discussion on Tunebia gen. nov. below). Tan & Ng (1994) commented that a fourth group could be recognized. Preliminary molecular studies show that Lybia is polyphyletic ( Lai et al. 2011). However, a revision of the genus will require a more extensive series of specimens as well as the examination of the types of the different species.
