Amydetes luzecu View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 18 View FIGURES 10 – 18 , 40 View FIGURES 23 – 40 , 59, 78, 96, 124, 142, 216–219)

Diagnosis. Antennomere III as long as pedicel, flabellum 3– 4 x longer than antennomere III. Maxillary palpomere IV 4x longer than III. Pronotum with lateral margins divergent posteriad, anterior margin notably projected. Abdominal sternum VIII with posterior margin straight. Pygidium with median lobe acuminate, slightly longer than lateral lobe, as wide as 1/2 posterior margin width; indentations between lateral lobe and median lobe well developed; lateral lobe well developed, acuminate.

Colouration: ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 10 – 18 ) Integument yellowish-brown. Prothorax generally with two maculae yellowish-brown on the sides, expansions pale yellow. Elytron with distal 1/2 or apices black, often with suture and outer margin pale yellow. Abdomen with up to posterior 1/2 dark-brown.

Head. ( Figs. 40 View FIGURES 23 – 40 , 59) Fronto-clypeus depressed up to antennal sockets, anterior margin 1/5 wider than distance between antennal sockets and slightly wider than distance between antennifers. Antenna with 29–32 antenomers (n=3); antennomere III as long as pedicel, flabellum 3– 4 x longer than antennomere III. Labrum rounded. Maxillary palpomere IV 4x longer than III, as long as labial palpomere III.

Thorax. (Figs. 78, 96) Pronotum with lateral margins divergent posteriad, anterior margin notably projected, posterior angles well developed, acute and deflexed. Setigerous punctures irregularly separeted 1–1.5x the diameter of a puncture. Hypomeron slightly less than 1/4 longer than high. Elytron slightly dehiscent, slightly wider subapically; marginal costa with anterior margin not projected. Scutellum with lateral margins convergent posteriad. Mesosternum with posterior margin rounded.

Abdomen. ( Figs. 124 View FIGURES 116 – 124 , 142 View FIGURES 134 – 142 , 216–219 View FIGURES 208 – 219 ) Abdominal sternum V with posterior margin straight. Abdominal sternum VI with lantern as long as 3/4 sternum length and as wide as 1/2 sternum width. Abdominal sternum VII with lantern as long as 3/4 sternum length and as wide as 3/5 sternum width. Abdominal sternum VIII with posterior margin straight or irregular. Pygidium with median lobe acuminate, slightly longer than lateral lobe, as wide as 1/2 posterior margin width; indentation between lateral lobe and median lobe well developed; lateral lobe well developed, acuminate. Terminalia: Syntergite with anterior margin truncate and posterior asymmetric, lateral margins slightly convergent posteriad, with um a pair of wisp of bristles laterally. suture between abdominal tergites IX and X indistinct. Abdominal sternum IX slightly more than 2x longer than syntergite, slightly more than 2x longer than wide; wider at posterior 1/3; with lateral margins strongly divergent posteriad up to 2/3 sternum length, bristled at posterior 1/3; posterior margin irregular. Aedeagus: Phallobase asymmetric. Parameres close-set subapically, rounded apically. Phallum 1/3 longer than paramere, apex rounded, subparallel-sided, ventral plate well-sclerotized and straight, apical expansions indistinct.

Type-material. Holotype: BRAZIL. Pará: Serra Norte (Caldeirão), 20–23/I/1985, male (MPEG). Eight paratypes, same procedence of the holotype: 1 male, 23–26/I/1985 (MPEG); 2 males, 26–29/I/1985 (MPEG); 1 male, 29[XII/84]– 01/I/1985 (MPEG); 2 males, 9– 12 /II (N3) (MPEG); 2 males, 15–18/II/1985 (MPEG).

Etymology. “ Luze-cu ” is a popular name by which fireflies in Brazil are referred to, especially in the rural municipalities ( Lenko and Papavero 1996). As the name suggests, it is based on the common knowledge that fireflies “light their bums”. Name in apposition.

Remarks. Amydetes luzecu sp. nov. resembles Amydetes apicalis (Fig. 2) and Amydetes vagalume sp. nov. ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 10 – 18 ). It differs from A. apicalis by the characteristics pointed out in the Remarks section of this species. It differs from Amydetes vagalume sp. nov. by the characteristics pointed out in the Remarks section of this species.
