Amydetes vagalume View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 17 View FIGURES 10 – 18 , 39 View FIGURES 23 – 40 , 58, 77, 95, 123, 141, 212–215)

Diagnosis: Antennomere III as long as pedicel. Maxillary palpomere IV 2x longer than III. Pronotum with posterior angle deflexed. Abdominal sternum VIII with posterior margin straight. Pygidium with median lobe beveled, slightly longer than lateral lobe, and as wide as 1/2 posterior margin width; indentation between lateral lobe and median lobe weakly developed; lateral lobe weakly developed, acuminate.

Colouration. ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 10 – 18 ) Integument brown or yellowish-brown. Prothorax generally with two maculae yellowish-brown on the sides, expansions pale yellow. Elytron yellowish-brown with distal 1/2 or apex black, often with suture and outer margin pale yellow. Abdomen with posterior 1/2 generally dark-brown, but a few specimens have abdômen dark-brown in a smaller proportion.

Head. ( Figs. 39 View FIGURES 23 – 40 , 58) Fronto-clypeus depressed up to antennal sockets, anterior margin 2x wider than distance between antennal sockets and slightly wider than distance between antennifers, generally with a discreet median bevel. Antenna with 29–32 antennomeres (n=3); antennomere III as long as pedicel, flabellum almost 3x longer than antennomere III. Labrum rounded or emarginate. Maxillary palpomere IV 2x longer than III, as long as labial palpomere III.

Thorax: (Figs. 77, 95) Pronotum with lateral margins divergent posteriad, posterior angle well developed, acutes and deflexed. Setigerous punctures irregularly separeted 0.5–1.5x the diameter of a puncture. Hypomeron 1/ 3 longer than high. Elytron slightly dehiscent; wider subapically; marginal costa with anterior margin projected. Scutellum subparallel-sided. Mesosternum with posterior margin rounded.

Abdomen. ( Figs. 123 View FIGURES 116 – 124 , 141 View FIGURES 134 – 142 , 212–215 View FIGURES 208 – 219 ) Abdominal sternum V with posterior margin straight. Abdominal sterna VI and VII with lanterns as long as 3/4 sternum length and as wide as 1/2 sternum width. Abdominal sternum VIII with posterior margin straight or irregular. Pygidium with median lobe beveled, slightly longer than lateral lobe, and as wide as 1/2 posterior margin width; indentation between lateral lobe and median lobe weakly developed; lateral lobe weakly developed, acuminate. Terminalia: Syntergite with anterior and posterior margin symmetric and rounded, lateral margins subparallel, with a pair of wisps of bristles laterally; suture between abdominal tergites IX and X conspicuous. Abdominal sternum IX slightly more than 1/4 longer than syntergite, 2x longer than wide; wider at posterior 1/3; with lateral margins abruptly divergent posteriad up to 2/3 length, bristled at posterior 1/3; posterior margin truncate. Aedeagus: Phallobase asymmetric. Parameres basally constricted, close-set subapically. Paramere and phallum roundeds apically. Phallum 1/3 longer than paramere, with apex rounded, subparallel-sided. Ventral plate weakly sclerotized and straight.

Type-material. Holotype: BRAZIL, Pará: Itaituba, Rio Tapajóz, III/1963, Dirings, male (MZSP). Paratypes from BRAZIL, Roraima: Ji-Paraná, 14 males, 20–23/XI/1984 (MPEG); idem, 2 males, 17–20/XI/1984 (Linha 12.B) (MPEG).

Etymology. “ Vagalume ” is a popular name for fireflies in Brazil. Name in apposition.

Remarks. Amydetes vagalume sp. nov. resembles A. apicalis (Fig. 2) and A. luzecu sp. nov. ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 10 – 18 ). It differs from A. apicalis by the characteristics pointed out in the Remarks section of this species. It differs from A. luzecu sp. nov. by maxillary palpomere IV 2x longer than III (4x longer in A. luzecu sp. nov.); Pronotum with anterior margin rounded, somewhat projected (notably projected in A. luzecu sp. nov.); pygidium with median lobe beveled (acuminate in A. luzecu sp. nov.).
