Metalimnobia (Metalimnobia) channpayna View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 15, 16 View FIGURES 15 – 16 )

Diagnosis. Brownish yellow, medium-sized crane fly. Antenna medium long, reaching slightly beyond frontal margin of prescutum if bent backwards. Thoracical pleuron yellow with brownish smears. Wing with three rounded spots and darkening along cord. Venation typical for subgenus. Outer gonostylus with distinctly widened, beakshaped distal part, inner angle of which with acute tip, outer margin rounded. Inner gonostylus fleshy, nearly reaching posterior margin of outer gonostylus, both ends slightly narrowed. Paramere long and narrow, reaching beyond distal end of gonocoxite, but not reaching tip of penis, which is simple, long and narrow.

Description. Male. Body semi-polished, general coloration brownish yellow. Body length 6.2 mm, wing length 9.6 mm.

Head brownish yellow, dusted with brownish gray frontally and covered with sparse medium-long erect brownish setae. Eyes widely separated dorsally and nearly reaching each other ventrally. Length of antenna 1.65 mm, reaching to about middle of prescutum, if bent backwards. Scape yellowish brown, elongate, nearly cylindrical, bearing few short erect setae on dorsal surface. Pedicel yellow, approximately as long as wide. Flagellum 12-segmented. Five basal flagellomeres yellow, short, oval, getting slightly narrower from first to fifth segment. Remaining flagellomeres brown, distinctly narrower and elongate. Starting from fifth flagellomere verticils very long, four–five times longer than respective segment. Short, erect, yellowish pubescence denser on five basal flagellomeres, but nearly missing on distal segments. Rostrum semi-polished, brown with yellowish marks laterally. Palpus brown, covered with short yellowish pubescence and brown setae. Labellum yellowish proximally, brownish distally.

Thorax. Cervical sclerites and pronotum brownish dorsally, yellow laterally. Pronotum dorsally with few erect brown setae. Ground color of prescutum yellow. Sclerite polished with four distinct brown longitudinal stripes. Both median stripes distinctly brown only at both ends, but central part missing, interrupted by ground color. Lateral stripes distinct, extending onto scutal lobes. Lateral margins of lobes yellow. Scutellum yellow with pale central part. Mediotergite brown with yellow frontolateral angles. Pleuron yellow with indistinct brownish spots. Wing ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 15 – 16 ) with yellow costal field, remaining area grayish, patterned with brown: large rounded spot with light central part at base of radial sector, smaller rounded spot with clear central part at branching point of Rs and small rounded spot at tip of R1 and R2; small spot at base of cell r; cord, distal end of discal cell and distal parts of both anal veins surrounded by dark areas. Wing stigma big, yellow, narrowly marginated with brown. Veins brownish. Venation: Sc long, Sc1 nearly reaching level of Rs branching point, Sc2 close to Sc1 tip. R2 transverse, at tip of R1. Rs long, angulated at base. R3 and R4+5 long, arched and parallel to each other. Cross-vein r-m distinct, at base of discal cell. Discal cell large and very wide, it is only 1.6 times as long as wide. Basal deflection of CuA1 at or very shortly before branching point of M. First anal vein slightly sinuous, second anal vein distinctly arched at wing margin. Anal angle wide, posterior margin widely rounded. Halter 1.2 mm long. Stem of halter pale. Knob distinctly bicolored, basal part yellowish, distal brown. Coxae and trochanters brownish yellow, frontal somewhat darker than the other. Trochanter with distinct dark brown rim on ventro-distal margin. Coxae and trochanters covered with long but scarce brownish setae. Femur and tibia uniformly yellow. Leg covered with scarce short adjacent brown setae. Femur of posterior leg 6.8 mm long.

Abdomen. Tergites yellow at base, posterior margin widely and distinctly brown. Basal sternite pale yellow, sternites two to six yellow, slightly infuscated with brownish, distal sternites brown with paler posterior margin. Abdominal sclerites covered with scarce erect brownish setae.

Hypopygium. Male genitalia ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 15 – 16 ) yellow, setose. Ninth tergite with nearly rounded posterior margin and slightly emarginate at middle. Gonocoxite elongate, with short rounded blunt apexed and setose ventro-mesal lobe. Outer gonostylus with distinctly widened distal part, inner distal-most angle of which extended into beak, tip pointapexed, outer margin rounded, posterior margin just slightly arched and darkened. Inner gonostylus fleshy, narrow, nearly parallel-sided and nearly reaching posterior margin of outer gonostylus. Paramere long and narrow, distal part distinctly narrower than basal, reaching to about distal end of gonocoxite, but not reaching tip of penis. Apex angulate and setose. Penis simple, long and narrow.

Female unknown.

Period of activity. Species is flying in August.

Distribution. North Korea.

Type material. Holotype ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 15 – 16 ): male (pinned), genitalia in glycerol in micro vial on same pin, [North] Korea, prov. Ryang-gang, Chann-Pay plateau, 9–28.VIII.1971, leg. J. Papp, Horvatovich [malaise trap, approximate coordinates N41.99426, E128.09787] ( HNHM) ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 17 – 21 ).

Etymology. Species is named after the name of the locality, Chann-Pay plateau, where it was collected.

Remarks. M. channpayna sp. nov. is closely related to M. bifasciata , it has somewhat similar general appearance, wing patterning and male genitalia, but distinct differences are observed in most structures and patterning, especially in male genitalia. Male genitalia of M. channpayna sp. nov. also resembles M. dualis Savchenko, 1986 from Altay mountains. M. channpayna sp. nov. has unique wing pattern among Metalimnobia , because it is composed of circles instead of usual dark spots. Circled patterning is more usual in other, not related genera, like Discobola or Epiphragma . Dark spot at base of cell r, which is present in M. channpayna sp. nov., is totally missing in M. bifasciata , but common in such species, like M. quadrimaculata , M. quadrinotata , or M. zetterstedti . M. bifasciata has two prescutal stripes, thus M. channpayna sp. nov. prescutum with four stripes more resembles other Metalimnobia , but median stripes in other species are complete, not interrupted like in M. channpayna sp. nov. Ninth tergite of M. channpayna sp. nov. has rounded posterior margin, ninth tergite of M. bifasciata is wider and generally more angulate than rounded. Outer gonostylus of M. bifasciata distally extended into two angles, but outer margin of M. channpayna sp. nov. is rounded. Inner gonostylus of M. channpayna sp. nov. nearly reaches distal margin of outer gonostylus, but is distinctly shorter in M. bifasciata . Tip of paramere of M. channpayna sp. nov. setose, that of M. bifasciata bare.
