Family Aphelidesmidae Brölemann, 1916 View in CoL .

Aphelidesmidae View in CoL : Hoffman, 1998: 135–136; 1999: 384. Vohland, 1998: 129–130. Jeekel, 2000: 3, 71. Shelley, 2003: 1999 (list). BUeno-Villegas et al., 2004: 592 (list).

Type-genus. Aphelidesmus Brölemann, 1898 View in CoL .

Diagnosis. Differing from Platyrhacidae by the laterally smooth, rounded paranotal margins with thickened peritremata; ozopores located caudal to midlengths on latter, opening laterad.

Components. Two subfamilies, Aphelidesminae and Amplininae Hoffman, 1954 .

Distribution ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ). Northeastern Mexico and Tobago southward to two-thirds of the latitudinal length of Peru and Brazil primarily north of the Amazon River. The northernmost confirmed localities are in southern San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas, Mexico; while plausible, the accuracy of the northernmost record, of Amplinus leon Chamberlin, 1952 , from Monterey, Nuevo León, was questioned by Hoffman (1999), and we denote it with a question mark (?) in Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 .
