Type material. Holotype: male (in Euparal), BRAZIL, S P, Luiz Antônio, Lagoa do Diogo (21° 37’ S, 47° 48’ W), leg. S. T. Strixino, 10/xvi/2003 (C1–04, LEIA /UFSCar). Paratype: male (in Euparal), as holotype; (C1–05, LEIA /UFSCar).

Etymology. Named in honor of Dr. Caroline Silva Neubern de Oliveira, my friend and great student of Brazilian Tanypodinae .

Diagnostic characters. Caladomyia carolae sp. n. differs from other species of the genus by the combination of the following characters: Adult male: AR 0.85; fore leg ratio 2.90; hypopygium with anal tergite bands of Ytype, fused part 38 µm long; anal point 46 µm long, with posterior ending divided in three protrusions; bars 35 µm long; digitus short; anal tergite setae large and stout.

Description

Male (n = 2)

Dimensions. Median, length about 2.4 mm. Wing length 1.32–1.34 mm.

Coloration. Head yellow brown, flagellum and maxillary palp pale brown. Thorax yellow-green. Abdomen yellowish. Legs yellowish.

Head. Antennal flagellum 894–912 µm long; AR 0.85–0.87. Palpomere 2–5 lengths: 43–50, 94–100, 106–112, 175–181 µm. Frontal tubercles short, 9.2 µm long. Temporal setae 5–6, uniserial. Clypeus with 12–15 setae. Thorax. Acrostichals 6–8, beginning near antepronotum; dorsocentrals 5; prealar 1, scutellars 2–3. Halteres with 3 setae.

Wing 0.31–0.38 mm wide. VR 1.26. WW 0.23–0.28. Brachiolum with 1 seta; squama bare.

Legs. Front tibia with short slender white spur. Mid and hind tibiae with black combs each one with one spur. Lengths and proportions as in Table 7.

Anal tergite 75 µm long, with 2 large and stout tergite setae 46 µm long. Anal tergite bands Y-type; fused part about 34–38 µm long. Anal point 43–46 µm long, lateral margins with 3 setae; posterior ending divided in three protrusions; median protrusion 5 µm long; AnPr 3.0. Anal point bars 35 µm long, on base of anal point, their tips not reaching apex of anal point; AnPBR 0.97–1.1.The base of bars inferior pair situated near middle of anal point. Superior volsella subrectangular 37 µm long; posteromedian corner drawn out lightly, with 4 dorsal setae and 3 setae on anterior part of internal margin (two dorsal, one ventral). Digitus short 7–8 µm long, not reaching beyond posteromedian corner of superior volsella. Inferior volsella 85 µm long. Median volsella short 23 µm long, with 2 lamelliform and 4 simple setae. Gonostylus 37 µm long. Hypopygium ratio 1.07–1.27.

Remarks. The male of C. carolae sp. n. resembles C. poppigi Säwedal , by the possession of large anal tergite setae, but differs by the shape of them, rounded in the first and flattened in the latter.

The specimens were obtained in laboratory in emergent trap put over the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia azurea Kunth collected in the oxbow lake (Lagoa do Diogo) in the Jataí Ecological Reserve.
