Genus Macrochorobates Scillato-Yané, 1980
Type species: Proeuphractus scalabrinii Moreno and Mercerat, 1891 .
1891 Proeuphractus Moreno and Mercerat : 226 (nec 1886 Ameghino: 208).
1894 Dasypus Lydekker : 60 (nec 1758 Linnaeus: 50).
1908 Proeuphractus Ameghino : 427 (nec 1886 Ameghino: 208). 1914 Acantharodeia Rovereto : 108.
Included species: Only the type species.
Amended diagnosis (from: Scillato-Yané 1982: 95–96): Large-sized armadillo, intermediate between Euphractus and Macroeuphractus , but smaller than Priodontes . Elongated skull, with mostly straight profile in lateral view. Laterally expanded rostrum, extended parietal surface giving place to an enlarged temporal fossa and temporal lines composing a very developed sagittal crest, as in Macroeuphractus but unlike other Euphractinae . Nasal bones are not projected over the nasal aperture, unlike most Euphractinae . Choanae placed closer to the posterior zygomatic process, as in Euphractus . Upper and lower dental series composed of 10 robust and chisel-shaped molariforms. M1 implanted in the premaxilla, and absence of an upper and lower toothless anterior spout, as in Macroeuphractus but unlike other Euphractinae . Strong anterior dentition, with the main axis of M1 and m1-2 being oblique to that of the dental series. Third trochanter of the femur placed closer to the distal epiphysis with respect to extant armadillos. Nuchal osteoderms are wider towards the posterior margin, unlike other Euphractinae . Dorsal carapace with serrated borders, composed of scapular shield, mobile bands, and a pelvic shield, more stylized than in other Euphractinae due to a smaller number of osteoderms per row. Large dorsal carapace osteoderms, comparable in size to those of Macroeuphractus , with an ornamentation pattern including an elevated keeled central figure, similar to Chorobates .
