Kanakaptera carininota n. sp.

(Photo 6)

Material examined. Holotype ♂: New Caledonia, S-Prov. / Monts Koghis, forest litter / ca. 5km N Nouméa 550m / 25 XI 2009 Schuh (11A) // Holotype ♂ / Kanakaptera n.gen. / carininota n. sp. / des. E. HEISS 2010. This specimen lacks the tarsi of fore legs and left hind leg, tibiae and tarsi of right middle and hind legs. Paratype ♀ collected with holotype.

Diagnosis. Closely related to heimiana n. sp., from which it is distinguished by a smaller size, different outline of the postocular lobe, and different structure of thoracic sclerites; from other species of this genus by the characters given in the key.

Description. Apterous, of general habitus and colouration as other species but of smaller size.

Head: Distinctly wider than long (24/18); antenniferous lobes with subparallel lateral margins, apices rounded; antennae short, width of head 1.14x as wide as length of antennae; length of antennal segments /I/II/III/IV = 7/4/4/6; postocular lobe smaller than with across eyes, first straight without a distinct tooth then converging to a small subrectangular posterior projection, this separated from collar by a notch.

Pronotum: 3.4x as wide as long (34/10), anterolateral expansions angularly produced laterally; median sclerite of disk wide, delimited by carinate margins followed by deep grooves, its surface smooth at middle, depressed laterally; lateral sclerites as in other species (fig.9).

Mesonotum: Median sclerite wider than that of pronotum, laterally delimited by a groove and the depressed lateral sclerites; disk raised and carinate along midline, highest on posterior margin.

Metanotum: Raised and carinate at middle, depressed laterally, median fusion line to mtgI short, that between mtgI and mtgII longer and reflexed laterally but not extending to lateral margin; raised median parts of mtgI+mtgII with a shallow depression.

Abdomen: Structure of fusion lines of the surface as in laticeps n. sp.

Female: Basic structures as in male but of larger size and more rounded abdomen; pe-angles VII with a small round posterior projection, tergite VII consisting of 2 lateral rounded lobes, these less projecting then triangular tergites IX+X.

Measurements. Holotype ♂: Length 4.25mm; length / width of mesonotum 8/30; width of abdomen across tergite III 46; paratype ♀: length 5.1mm; w/l of head 27/21; length of antennal segments I/II/III/IV = 7.5/4.5/5/7; ratio width of head / length of antennae 1.12; l/w pronotum 11/40; l/w mesonotum 9/35; w abdomen 59.

Etymology. Refers to the carinate thoracic sclerites.

Discussion. This species was collected in the same habitat as heimiana n. sp. at Mts. Koghis sifting forest litter, but is differing from the latter by several characters described above.
