Podaena latipalpis View in CoL ; Delgado & Palma, 2004: 328, figs 1–20. Larval morphology.

Differential diagnosis. Male ( Fig. 108 View FIGURE 108 ) body length (taken from anterior margin of labrum to elytral apex) 1.90 mm; female body length 1.95 mm. The male maxillary palps are modified ( Figs 7−10 View FIGURES 1−24 ). The third (penultimate) palpomere has a conspicuous groove with wide lateral expansions ( Fig. 8, 10 View FIGURES 1−24 ), appearing approximately round in its ventral view ( Figs 7, 9 View FIGURES 1−24 ); the fourth (distal) palpomere also has a groove, and is dorso-ventrally flattened, with a foliaceous appearance ( Figs 8, 10 View FIGURES 1−24 ). There is a degree of intraspecific variation in the expansion of the male palps of this species, with the widest distal palpomeres present in the southern populations ( Figs 7−8 View FIGURES 1−24 ).

The male foretibiae are modified ( Figs 42, 46 View FIGURES 39−46 ) and, as with the palps, there is some geographic intraspecific variation in the thickness and length of the setae associated with the distal expansion (thinner and longer in the southern populations) and in the depth of the mid invagination (shallower in the southern populations). The metaventral glabrous central area of P. latipalpis is as in Fig. 47 View FIGURES 47−51 , and similar to that in the other species of the complex as well as in P. dentipalpis , P. obscura and P. kuscheli . Neither the terminalia in both sexes (as in Figs 54, 57 View FIGURES 52−60 , 63, 65, 68 View FIGURES 61−68 ) nor the male genitalia (as in Figs 75−76 View FIGURES 75−78 and 79−82 View FIGURES 79−82 ) are useful to separate P. latipalpis from similar species.

The highly modified male maxillary palps ( Figs 7−10 View FIGURES 1−24 ) clearly separate P. latipalpis from species with not modified palps, i.e. P. aotea , P. glabriventris , P. maclellani , P. kuscheli and P. mariae . The male foretibiae ( Figs 42, 46 View FIGURES 39−46 ) and the male genitalia further separate P. latipalpis from P. glabriventris , P. maclellani and P. mariae , while the distance between tibial spines 1 and 2 further separate P. latipalpis from P. kuscheli ( Figs 35 View FIGURES 31−38 , 46 View FIGURES 39−46 ). Furthermore, the male maxillary palps of P. latipalpis are also different from those of P. dentipalpis ( Figs 15−16 View FIGURES 1−24 ) and P. trochanteralis ( Figs 17−18 View FIGURES 1−24 ), but the shape and chaetotaxy of the male foretibiae, especially on the anterior view, are even more diagnostic among these species (compare Figs 32, 34 View FIGURES 31−38 with Fig. 42 View FIGURES 39−46 ).

The male maxillary palps of P. latipalpis are similar to those of P. obscura ( Figs 11−14 View FIGURES 1−24 ), P. moanaiti ( Figs 3−4 View FIGURES 1−24 ) and P. hauturu ( Figs 5−6 View FIGURES 1−24 ). However, P. latipalpis can be clearly separated from P. obscura by the male foretibiae ( Figs 33 View FIGURES 31−38 , 42 View FIGURES 39−46 ). Further, both the much longer setae of the second palpomere in the palps of P. moanaiti , ( Figs 3−4 View FIGURES 1−24 ) as well as its narrower third (penultimate) palpomere allow separation of this species from P. latipalpis . The closest species to P. latipalpis is P. hauturu , but the third (penultimate) palpomere is wider and more round in P. latipalpis , while the fourth (distal) palpomere is clearly shorter in P. latipalpis ( Figs 5, 7, 9 View FIGURES 1−24 ). Additional characters to distinguish P. latipalpis from P. hauturu are the shape and chaetotaxy of the male foretibiae, especially in the distal half, best seen on the anterior view ( Figs 40, 42 View FIGURES 39−46 ).
