felderi Zerny, 1912

Cyanopepla eucyane Felder, 1874 : pl. 102, fig. 16 (junior secondary homonym). Type (s) of unknown sex, not traced [probably lost]. BRAZIL.

Napata felderi Zerny, 1912a: 118 ; Draudt, 1915: 139; Draudt, 1917: pl. 21, row c.

Current combination. Uranophora felderi Zerny, 1912 , comb. nov.

Remarks. Felder (1874) figured on the same plate two different taxa with the same specific epithet: Entomis eucyane Felder, 1874 (fig. 14) and Cyanopepla eucyane Felder, 1874 (fig. 16). Hampson (1898) included both in Napata Walker, 1854 , treating the former as a synonym of N. splendida (Herrich-Schäffer, [1854]), and the latter as a valid species. Zerny (1912) created the name N. felderi for C. eucyane , even though E. eucyane was still a junior synonym of N. splendida . Hampson (1914) removed E. eucyane from the synonymy, recognizing it as a valid species, ignoring both the homonymy and Zerny’s new name to C. eucyane . Draudt (1915) treated both species as valid, but recognized the homonymy and adopted the name N. felderi . Later, Hampson (1920) transferred E. eucyane to Belemniastis Hampson, 1901 , where it still is.

Cyanopepla eucyane was described from an unknown number of specimens from Brazil. Draudt (1915) gives Santos as the type locality, but the origin of this information is unknown. No potential syntypes were found at the BMNH, where Felder’s collection is housed ( Horn & Kahle 1935 –1937).

The new combination is justified by the fact that Hampson (1898) included Uranophora chalybea Hübner , [1831], the type species of Uranophora Hübner , [1831], in Napata . The adequacy of this taxonomic placement could not be evaluated.
