( Figs. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 24. 1 and 56 View FIGURES 55 – 65. 55 )

Diptilum crassum Zerny, 1912b: 123 . Holotype male by monotypy: COLOMBIA, Bogotá; with three handwritten labels “Steinheil, Bogota, coll 880 II”, “gen n. Diptilon sp.”, and “ Diptilum crassum Zerny type ♂”.

Current combination. Diptilon crassum Zerny, 1912 .

Condition of the type. Right antenna, hindlegs and small part of the left forewing missing. Specimen poorly mounted, with many loose scales littering the wings.

Remarks. Diptilon Prittwitz, 1870 is probably non-monophyletic, judging from the morphological variety found among the 16 valid species currently placed in it. There appear to exist at least two groups of species that may form unrelated monophyletic entities. One is evidently linked to D. telamonophorum Prittwitz, 1870 (type species of the genus), and D. crassum may be related to the other group, which comprises D. chrysocraspis Hampson, 1898 , D. sylpha Dognin, 1902 and D. hoffmannsi Rothschild, 1911 . However, the hindwings in these three species are reduced, which is probably the reason why they were assigned to Diptilon . The same does not occur in D. crassum , which indicates that its taxonomic position might be far from settled.
