Type material. Lectotype designated herein: BS046.13.014 SL: 37.5 mm, MD: 14.8 mm, Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali Torino ( Italy), illustrated in illustrated in Sacco (1888: pl. 4, fig. 1) and Ferrero Mortara et al. (1984: pl. 36, fig. 12). BS046.13.015, syntype of Potamides prolignitarum reticulata Sacco 1888 , Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali Torino ( Italy), Carcare ( Italy). BS046.13.016, syntype of Potamides prolignitarum cingulosa Sacco 1888 , Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali Torino ( Italy), S. Giustina ( Italy).

Type locality. S. Giustina ( Italy) (note that Sacco 1887: 156 mentioned Carcare as locality. The syntype illustrated in Sacco (1895) and Ferrero Mortara et al. (1984), however, derives from S. Giustina.

Stratigraphy. Early Oligocene, Rupelian, and late Oligocene—Early Miocene, Egerian.

Illustrated material. NHMW 2022/0041/0001, SL: 48.8 mm, MD: 17.3 mm, Máriahalom ( Hungary), Figs 15G l –G 2; NHMW 2022/0041/0002, SL: 51.8 mm, MD: 15.3 mm, Máriahalom ( Hungary), Figs 15H l –H 2; NHMW 2022/0041/0003, SL: 55.2 mm, MD: 19.8 mm, Máriahalom ( Hungary), Figs 15I l –I 2, all Egerian.

Studied material. 24 spec.,NHMW 2022/0041/0004, Máriahalom ( Hungary) ; 9 spec., NHMW2022/0041/0005, Máriahalom ( Hungary) .

Revised description. Large, moderately slender conical, with straight-sided to weakly convex whorls. Protoconch and early teleoconch whorls not preserved. Sculpture of four spiral cords of blunt, rounded, close-set beads, axially vaguely arranged in straight to faintly opisthocyrt axial ribs. Fifth weaker spiral cord of beads may occur at abapical suture, being largely covered by subsequent whorl. Suture moderately incised. Broad varices occur throughout growth. Last whorl moderately constricted with convex periphery and base. Aperture wide with flaring, thickened outer lip. Two blunt denticles deep inside aperture corresponding to varices on shell surface. Inner lip moderately callus, attached to base. Columella straight with weak central columellar fold. Siphonal canal deeply incised strongly deflected to the left.

Discussion. In Paratethyan literature, this species was confused so far with Terebralia lignitarum (e.g., Báldi & Steininger 1975). Already Janssen (1984), however, recognized that the Egerian specimens differ from T. lignitarum but had only limited material at hand. Now, there are numerous specimens available from Máriahalom ( Hungary), where it co-occurs in large numbers in coquinas with Ptychopotamides cinctus (Bruguière, 1792) , Granulolabium plicatum (Bruguière, 1792) and Mesohalina margaritacea ( Brocchi, 1814) . Terebralia prolignitarum is intermediate in morphology between Terebralia lignitarum ( Eichwald, 1830) and T. duboisi ( Ĥrnes, 1855) . It is closer to T. lignitarum concerning the large, blunt beads and prominent varices, but differs from T. lignitarum in its more slender shape, distinctly shorter last whorl and weaker columellar fold. The overall shell shape, in contrast, is closer to T. duboisi , which has weaker sculpture, weak varices and a shorter last whorl.

Central Paratethys. Egerian (late Oligocene/Early Miocene): Central Slovenia: Soteska ( Slovenia); Hungarian Paleogene Basin: Máriahalom ( Hungary) ( Báldi & Steininger 1975).

Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Rupelian (early Oligocene): Liguria: Sassello, Stella, S. Giustina, Pareto, Carcare ( Italy) ( Sacco 1895).
