sp. nov.

Macroglenes caudatus sp. nov.

(Figs 23, 33–37)

Etymology. The species is named for its long ovipositor, from the latin word cauda, caudae meaning tail.

PLATE 4 (FIGS 19–26). 19−22, forewing: 19, Macroglenes paludum (Graham) , female; 20. M. compressus (Förster) , female; 21. M. conjungens (Graham) , female (with upper side hairs enhanced); 22, M. penetrans (Kirby) , male (with upper side hairs enhanced). 23−26, female, gaster, lateral view: 23, M. caudatus sp. n.; 24, M. eximius (Haliday) ; 25, M. gibsoni sp. n.; 26, M. hokkaidensis sp. n.

Diagnosis. Body with metallic greenish color; clypeal margin not incised (cf. Figs 1–2); only F5 large, with sensilla (Figs 33–34); mesosoma almost flattened (cf. Fig. 11, but slightly more arched); pecten regular, extending about 2/3 length of hind tibia (Fig. 36); forewing without clear bare area between R and apical margin, basal cell bare (Fig. 35); ovipositor sheaths long, about 2/3 length of hind tibia (Fig. 23); hypopygium large, level with or surpassing tip of gaster (Fig. 23). Male with eyes normal (cf. Fig. 1) and scape not inflated (Fig. 34).

Description. Female.

Body length. 1.70–1.74 mm.

Color. Head and mesosoma with conspicuous green metallic reflections, slightly coppery especially on gaster, which appears darker. Antenna black, with greenish reflections on scape and pedicel. Mandible light brown. Legs with coxae and trochanters same color as mesosoma, femora and tibiae same color except extremities yellowish-brown; tarsi reddish yellow, with distal segment darker. Tegula dark, with some metallic reflections. Wings hyaline, with brown venation.

Head. In frontal view about as broad as high. Eye about 1.5–1.6X as high as long. Malar space about 1/3 eye height. Antenna (Fig. 33) with scape distinctly less than eye height, length about 4.5X width; pedicel in lateral view about 1.6–1.7X as long as broad; F1–F4 transverse, anelliform, without sensilla, all about the same length or only F4 slightly longer, and combined length distinctly shorter than pedicel; F1–F3 more closely compacted together; F5 large, with sensilla, width about 1.4X length; clava somewhat shorter than pedicel and funicle together, length about 1.8–2.3X width (depending on degree of collapsing).

PLATE 5 (FIGS 27–31). 27−31, female gaster, lateral view: 27, Macroglenes japonicus sp. n.; 28, M. noyesi sp. n.; 29, M. paludum (Graham) ; 30, M. samurai sp. n.; 31, M. zdeneki sp. n.

Mesosoma. In profile only slightly arched dorsally, length about 1.3–1.5X width and about 2.2–2.4X height. Mesoscutum and scutellum with very fine, engraved sculpture. Forewing (Fig. 35) about 2.1X as long as wide; costal cell with 6–8 hairs distally on upper surface; basal cell glabrous, basal vein with 5–6 hairs; M about 5.7– 6 X as long as R, which is about equal to P; stigma small, subtriangular; disc beyond R with hairs tending to be less dense but without a clearly defined bare area. Hind tibia with pecten regular, extending about 2/3 length of hind tibia (Fig. 36).

Gaster (Fig. 23). Ovipositor sheaths laterally compressed, length about 3.5–3.7X width, exserted for distance about equal to combined length of head and mesosoma, and about 2/3 length of hind tibia or slightly more. Hypopygium large, its tip at about same level as tip of gaster or slightly beyond it.

Male. Differs from female in the following characters:

Body length. 1.2–1.5 mm.

Head. Eye about 1.4–1.6X as high as long. Antenna (Fig. 34) with scape broader, length about 3.2–3.4X width; pedicel sometimes slightly shorter; F1–F2 usually not so closely compacted; F5 width about 1.3–1.6X length; clava length 1.6–2.2X width.

Mesosoma. Slightly more distinctly arched dorsally, length about 1.9–2.1X height. Forewing about 2.2– 2.3X as long as broad; basal cell with 6–10 hairs distally, most on the basal vein; stigma more variable in shape. Hind tibia with pecten more developed and regular, occupying at least about 4/5 of the tibia (Fig. 37).

Gaster. Slightly to distinctly shorter than head plus mesosoma combined, length about 2.8–6.3X width, sometimes very compressed laterally.
