Craspedosoma flavescens helveticum Verhoeff, 1894 View in CoL — Schubart (1934: 87)

Orobainosma pinivagum Verhoeff, 1901 — Spelda (2005: 121)

Orobainosoma flavescens vornatscheri Verhoeff, 1935 View in CoL syn. nov.

Diagnosis. Differs from the other congeners, except H. hungarica , by the presence of the distal notch of the posterior lamella. From H. hungarica , H. flavescens differs by 1) the number of body segments (mainly 30 in H. flave- scens vs. 28 in H. hungarica ), 2) the shape and size of the posterior lamella (smaller without proximal protrusion in H. flavescens vs. larger with proximal protrusion in H. hungarica ) and 3) the shape of mesal process (distal margin densely denticulated with an isolated posterior branch with a small tooth in H. flavescens vs. distal margin with several teeth, and with fork-like end in H. hungarica ).

Type locality. Austria-Hungary, unknown locality.

Comments. Since H. flavescens males with 28 body segments are known (see Spelda 2005) and since the coxal process of the posterior gonopods show some variability in Haasea species, we synonymize here Orobainosoma flavescens vornatscheri Verhoeff, 1935 with Haasea flavescens . Strasser (1966: 183) already stated a probable synonymy between vornatscheri and pinivaga (now flavescens ), but he did not officially synonymize them.

The examination of the Latzel’s type series of Craspedosoma flavescens housed in NHMW (see Wirkner et al. 2002: 13) revealed that the only two males assigned to this species are actually H. germanica and H. fonticulorum , respectively. At present, the male described by Latzel remains known only from the original description, unless the illustrated gonopod actually corresponds to a lose anterior gonopod not included in the type series of H. flavescens (NHMW9549) and part of the numerous fragments and juvenile specimens of Latzel’s collection of the species subsequently received by NHMW in 1919 and revised by J. Gruber in 2007. Although this material is probably part of Latzel’s type series acquisitioned in NHMW, we preferred not to designate a lectotype for the species based on this fragment.

In his original description of C. flavescens, Latzel (1884) stated he examined around 80 specimens, mainly juveniles from “Salzburg, Oberösterreich, Niederösterreich, Westungarn und Kärnten” as well as one specimen from “Tirol, Krain, Croatien, Galizien und Oberungarn” and France. Doubt in such a distribution of H. flavescens was already expressed by Verhoeff (1907: 326), who stated that these were probably several species.

Attems (1895, 1929, 1949, 1954) contributed to this confusion by assigning several known and undescribed taxa to Orobainosoma flavescens (see Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 and comments for H. cyanopida , H. filicis , H. fonticulorum , H. ger- manica, H. hungarica , H. inflata , H. plasana and H. gruberi sp. nov.), which in its turn generated mistakes in understanding species occurrences and distributions. In fact, Strasser & Minelli (1984) recognized that Attems’ (1949) record of H. flavescens from “ Lombardy ” in Italy as dubious. Probably this was H. fonticulorum . The record of O. flavescens from Bachern, Marburn (Maribor), based on 19 juveniles ( Attems 1949) is here assigned to Haasea inflata . Based on these facts, we delete H. flavescens from the list of species of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Italy. Two records of O. flavescens from Reistal (= Reisthal Rax) and Schöckl in Austria by Attems (1949), are not included in the distribution map here since these were based on juveniles and females, and four more species occur in the region.

Additionally, records of H. flavescens from the Czech Republic based on Lang’s (1971) unpublished monograph should be taken with reserve, since these could also be based on misidentified specimens (Dolejš, pers. comm.). The same is true for the Luxembourg records by Weber (2013), which could refer instead to the genus Xylophageuma . These localities are marked with question marks although we do not exclude that they might be good identifications. The record from Vosges Mt. in France by Bigler (1913) is considered correct since he described the second species of the genus Xylophageuma , leaving little chance that he could have mixed these species. Bröleman’s (1935) record of H. flavescens from French Jura was probably referred to Bigler’s (1913) record from Swiss Jura, so we exclude it here though the occurrence of flavescens in Jura Mountain in France is also highly plausable. The record from Tatry Mountains should be also taken with reserve as it could refer to Hylebainosoma .
