Holcostethus Fieber, 1860 View in CoL View at ENA
This genus has species occurring in both the Old World and the New World, which has led to some confusion concerning the status of some of the species. Workers in the New World have usually considered the genus Peribalus Mulsant & Rey to be a synonym of this genus, although some of the older records will be under Peribalus . Workers ( Ribes & Schmitz 1992, Belousova 2007) in the Old World, however, have considered both Holcostethus and Peribalus to be valid genera. This might be warranted, but they did not study species from the Western Hemisphere, so it is not certain to which of these two genera our species belong. We have decided to treat them as members of the genus Holcostethus until further study can be conducted. At present, there are twelve species included in the genus, seven of which occur in North America. McDonald (1975) revised our species with a subsequent update ( McDonald 1982).
