Comments: Traditionally, two subspecies have been recognized within this taxon with the nominate subspecies (juga and tylus subequal in length) occurring more to the south and Euschistus servus euschistoides (Vollenhoven) (juga longer than tylus) more to the north. After studying the recorded distributions of these two forms, it is our opinion that these two forms do not fit the standard definition of a subspecies; that is, these two forms are broadly sympatric with numerous intermediates in the zone of overlap. We prefer to recognize this taxon as a single species with northern and southern forms. Froeschner (1988) listed both as subspecies. Many of the early records of the more northern form are under the synonymic name Euschistus fissilis Uhler , and some of the early records of the more southern form are under another synonymic name Euschistus impictiventris Stål. The ‘Dakota’ record ( Uhler 1876) probably applies to North Dakota (see Rider 2012). This species is commonly called the brown stink bug.
