Euschistus obscurus ( Palisot de Beauvois, 1817)
Distribution: United States: AL ( McPherson & Sites 1989), FL, GA, LA ( Rosewall 1922, McPherson et al. 1982), MS, TX. ( Mexico, West Indies)
Comments: Many early workers misidentified this species, listing it under the name Euschistus bifibulus (Palisot de Beauvois) . Barber (1927) recognized that the species in the southern United States was different from the true Euschistus bifibulus from the West Indies. He described a new species, Euschistus atromaculosus , for the North American species. Barber & Bruner (1932) placed Euschistus atromaculosus as a synonym of this species. So, all early records of Euschistus bifibulus from the southern United States should be transferred to this species. For example, the record listed above from Louisiana ( Rosewall 1922) is under the name Euschistus bifibulus .
