Localities. Ponds in Pirassununga, State of São Paulo, Brazil (type locality) and Paraná River below and above of the reservoir of Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Station in the locality of Foz do Iguaçú (25º32’52’’S, 54º35’17’’W), State of Paraná, Brazil (present study)

Specimens studied. Holotype, CHIOC 36276; six paratypes, CHIOC 36272, 36273a–b, 36274a–b, 36275; voucher specimens: CHIOC 37688a–b, 37691a–b, 37693a–b, 37696, 37699.

Prevalence. 3.9 % (1 out of 26 fishes examined)

Redescription. (Based on 7 specimens). Tegument with annulations. Cephalic lobes moderately developed; Eyes 4: posterior pair larger than anterior pair. Haptor subhexagonal, with 7 pairs of hooks with ancyrocephaline distribution. Ventral bar with slightly expanded ends, postero-median projection. Dorsal bar rod-shaped, with slightly expanded ends, irregular anterior mid-third margin, thickened posterior margin. Ventral anchor with welldifferentiated roots, superficial root longer than deep root often with a delicate sclerotization on the distal extremity, shaft slightly curved, straight point. Dorsal anchor with elongate tapering superficial root, short deep root, evenly curved shaft, point.Hook with erected thumb, shank divided into 2 subunits, proximal subunit of shank expanded. FH loop well developed, 0.4 shank length. MCO a tube of about 1 1/2 coils, funnel-shaped base with marginal sclerotized flange. Accessory piece articulated to base of MCO, comprising a folded, ribbon-like structure, distally. Testis dorsal to germarium; seminal vesicle a dilation of vas deferens. Germarium ovate. Vagina sinistral, non sclerotized. Vitellaria in two bilateral fields of trunk, from pharynx to the posterior region of trunk, coextensive with intestinal ceca. Oviduct, ootype not observed.

Measurements of specimens from S. brasiliensis . Ventral bar 50 (47–51; n=6) long; dorsal bar 47 (42–53; n=5) long. Ventral anchor 38 (37–40; n=12) long, base width 19 (18–20; n=12). Dorsal anchor 35–37 (n=3) long, base width 16–21 (n=3). Hook pairs 1–5, 16 (14–19; n=8) long, pairs 2–4,6–7, 22 (20–26; n=40) long.

Remarks. The few specimens of Annulotrematoides bryconi collected from S. brasiliensis are in accordance with the general morphology of the original description and type specimens. Measurements are equally compatible. However, several illustrations presented by Cuglianna et al. (2003) lack the necessary precision especially those of the bars, hooks and copulatory complex. Otherwise, the description is adequate enough to provide differentiation of the species from the type species, Annulotrematoides amazonicus Kritsky and Boeger, 1995 . A. bryconi has a coiled MCO, while it is arched in A. amazonicus . Salminus brasiliensis is a new host record for A. bryconi , originally described from Brycon cephalus . Salminus and Brycon , however, are closely related ( Ortí & Meyer 1997) and this may facilitate exchange of parasite species. The low numbers of specimens of A. bryconi collected during this study, however, suggests that S. brasiliensis probably does not represent an important host source for the parasite species and the association is likely occasional.
