Hemicrepidius morio (LeConte, 1853)

( Figs. 28a–e View Fig , 29b View Fig )

Asaphes morio LeConte 1853: 450 ; LeConte 1869: 371; Candèze 1863: 213; Horn 1880: 71.

Hemicrepidius morio (LeConte) : Leng 1920: 170; Lane 1952: 66; Lane 1971: 26; Hatch and Kincaid 1958: 14; Chapman 1964: 909; Bousquet 1991: 183; Bousquet et al. 2013: 184.

Asaphes verna Candèze 1863: 212–213 ; Horn 1875: 149 (as synonym of H. morio ); Horn 1880: 71 (as synonym of H. morio ).

Diagnosis. Hemicrepidius morio can be distinguished from all other Hemicrepidius by the following combination of features: Very sparse pronotal punctation with punctures separated by one to four puncture diameters; a straight prosternal process in lateral view ( Fig. 28c View Fig ), and the hypomeron with the hind angle visible in ventral view.

It is possible that H. morio could be confused with H. montanus , and ways to distinguish the two are discussed above. Another possibility is confusion with dark H. memnonius , which never have the straight prosternal process found in H. morio , and have much closer and larger pronotal punctation.

Redescription. Length 13.0–22.0 mm, width 4.0–6.0 mm; color nearly uniformly dark brown to black dorsally, elytra not contrasting with pronotum, in some parts of ventral surface paler; integument shining. Setae short, depressed, brown-black. Head: Punctures small, appearing simple, separated by half to two puncture diameters; frons weakly concave anteromedially, some with slight triangular impression medially in dorsal view; frontal carina complete, roughly V-shaped to broadly rounded when viewed from front, frontoclypeal region absent medially, at most weakly projecting in lateral view; eyes moderate and weakly bulging, ocular index 69–71 (n = 2); antenna serrate, antennomere 2 spherical, antennomere 3 subtriangular, 2× length of 2 and with similar punctation, antennomere 3 subequal in length to 4, antennomeres 4–6 about 2× longer than wide, antennomeres 7–10 narrower, about 3× longer than wide, antennomeres 4–11 with subtle medial line bearing less setae than edges, antennomere 11 with tip constricted, some almost appearing as pseudosegment, antenna not reaching pronotal posterior edge by one to two antennomeres to extending past it by up to 2 antennomeres. Prothorax: Pronotum 1.1–1.3× wider than long, widest at hind angles or just anterior of midlength; sides weakly to broadly arcuate, gradually narrowing anteriorly; hind angles divergent with lateral edge sinuate anterior of hind angle, dorsal carina present, directed antero-medially; punctures on disc similar in size to punctures on head, appearing simple, separated by one to four puncture diameters, becoming larger, closer, nearly contiguous, and subumbilicate laterally; posterior edge with sublateral notches. Hypomeron with subumbilicate punctures, similar in size to lateral pronotal punctures, nearly contiguous throughout; posterior margin emarginate with hind angle visible in lateral ( Fig. 28c View Fig ) and ventral view and truncate at tip. Prosternum with punctation smaller than punctation on hypomeron, appearing simple, separated by one puncture diameter, sparse medially with lots of impunctate areas; anterior lobe short, broadly rounded, nearly straight to subtly deflexed, only partially covering ventral mouthparts; prosternal process straight and impunctate between procoxae, dorso-ventrally thickened and straight past procoxae. Pterothorax: Mesoventral cavity with lateral edges expanded ventrally in almost 90- degree angle, visible anteriad mesocoxae; posterior edge of cavity truncate. Metaventrite with punctures smaller than punctures on hypomeron, simple, separated by one puncture diameter laterally, less dense medially. Scutellar shield elongate, about twice as long as wide, narrowly rounded posteriorly, sides sinuate, dorsal surface weakly concave, anterior margin nearly straight, setae radiating from midline, similar in length and color to setae on pronotum and elytra. Elytral striae moderately impressed basally; interstriae flat to slightly convex, punctures small, evenly spaced; basal carina crenulate. Legs with lobes on tarsomeres 2 and 3 wide, visible dorsally, lobe on 3 largest, lobe on tarsomere 2 second largest, lobes on tarsomeres 1 and 4 small, narrow, visible laterally. Abdominal ventrites: Punctures simple, slightly smaller than punctures on metaventrite, nearly contiguous laterally, further apart medially; fifth ventrite broadly rounded; sides of each ventrite with microserrations. Male genitalia ( Figs. 28d, e View Fig ): Parameres subparallel on basal half and gradually narrowing towards base of sharply acute (<45°) pre-apical expansions; apex of paramere narrowly pointed, membranous, with setose ventral patch at pre-apical expansion and 5–8 apical dorsal setae. Median lobe relatively narrow, gradually narrowing apically throughout length; basal struts forming 90-degree angle latero-basally.

Distribution. Specimens were examined from the following states and provinces: CANADA: BC; UNITED STATES: CA, ID, MT, NV, OR, WA ( Fig. 29b View Fig ).

Notes. The amount of sexual dimorphism in H. morio is quite high, with females often being much larger than males. I agree with Horn (1880) that the differences between Asaphes morio and A. verna are sexual. The character of the impunctate first stria of the elytra in A. verna used by Candèze was likely an artifact of the light source as the type lacked this character when examined.

Hemicrepidius morio is thought to use sex pheromones based on observations of specimens flying to cut logs and of males flying to females ( Chapman 1964), which is consistent with observations in other elaterids. However, the chemical make-up of this alleged attractant remains unknown.

Larvae have not been associated.
