Subfamily Buprestinae Leach, 1815

Genus Trapezitergum Yu, Ś lipi ń ski et Shih, gen. nov. ( Figures 1 View FIGURE 1 , 2 View FIGURE 2 )

Type species. Trapezitergum grande Yu, Ślipiński et Shih, sp. nov.

Etymology. The generic name is derived from a combination of the Latin nouns trapezium (‘trapeziform’) and – tergum (‘notum’), highlighting its trapezoidal pronotum. Gender neuter.

Diagnosis. Trapezitergum Yu, Ślipiński et Shih, gen. nov. can be distinguished from all known fossil Buprestidae by its large body, prothorax twice as wide as long with pronotum trapezoidal and the prosternum in front of procoxae much longer than procoxal diameter, the metaventral transverse suture distinctly bisinuate medially and the abdominal ventrite 5 triangular and weakly tridentate apically. To our knowledge all fossil species attributed to Buprestinae or Buprestidae incertae sedis have 10 distinct elytral striae or grooves (Alexeev 1995- 2009) which are not visible in Trapezitergum grande Yu, Ślipiński et Shih, sp. nov.

Description. Head retracted into the prothorax, nearly as broad as the anterior portion of pronotum; frontoclypeus broad, feebly convex, finely densely punctuate; eyes large, oval, inner margins converging above.

Antennae short, weakly serrate from antennomere 4 onward. Antennal sockets distinctly separated, located close to inner margin of eyes. Scape narrow, slightly longer than wide, pedicel short, stout, antennomere 3 slightly longer than wide.

Pronotum trapezoidal, about 2.0 times as wide as long, the widest part at its base; anterior margin arcuate, posterior margin slightly bisinuate; lateral margins straight. Prosternum long in front of coxae; prosternal process narrower than coxal diameter, narrowing apically, apex feebly pointed, reaching well beyond procoxa; postcoxal projections absent; notosternal sutures well developed.

Elytra with epipleuron narrow, with inner margin subparallel to elytral margin, surfaces without obvious rows of punctures or grooves but with irregular micropunctures.

Mesocoxae rounded, separated by about coxal diameter; mesoventrite damaged partially missing, mesanepisternum and mesepimeron disassociated on one side. Metaventrite with complete discrimen; metanepisternum triangular, converging posteriorly; metepimeron not visible. Transverse metaventral suture distinctly bisinuate medially, incomplete laterally. Metacoxae transverse with well developed plates; anterior margin sinuate, hind margin weakly oblique. Abdomen with five visible ventrites, the basal two connate; ventrite 5 triangular.

Legs, protrochanter triangular, protibiae feebly arcuate; meso- and metatrochanter trapeziform; femora robust; metatibiae straight; tarsi not preserved.

Male genitalia partially visible, elongate, penis (median lobe) parallel-sided, the apex obtuse; parameres expanded preapically before narrowing to acuminate apices.

Trapezitergum grande Yu, Ś lipi ń ski et Shih, sp. nov.

Material examined. Holotype male CNU-COL-NN-2010411.

Locality and horizon. Collected from the Yixian Formation in Liutiaogou Village, Tianyi County, Inner Mongolia, China. Early Cretaceous.

Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin adjective, ‘grandis’, referring to its body that is larger than any other fossil buprestids previously reported.

Description. Length 35.3 mm, width 12.5 mm; body elongate-ovoid. Antennae incomplete, right antenna missing antennomeres 9-11, left one missing antennomeres 10-11. Elytra 23.5 mm long, 3.8 times as long as wide, the widest part at the apical 1/3; lateral margins rounded at base, widening to apical 1/3, then gradually narrowing to slightly emarginate bidentate apices; epipleuron narrow, with inner margin subparallel to elytral margin, from anterior 1/3 extended to the apex; disc with a narrow longitudinal band and 5 oblong spots. Ventral surface reticulate, finely punctuate. Abdomen with five visible ventrites, the first ventrite 2.4 times as long as the second one, ventrites 2-4 subequal in length, ventrite 5 triangular, 1.4 times as long as the previous one, the apex of the ventrite 5 tridentate.
