Gleichenella View in CoL has often been included in Dicranopteris View in CoL but differs by the blades forking unequally to form alternate pairs of pinnae, by lacking accessory pinnae at the forks (not to be confused pseudostipules, which are present), and by anatomical characters, chromosome number, and spore morphology. The genus has a single species. Gleichenella View in CoL produces allelopathic substances that inhibit germination and seedling development of angiosperms ( Voltarelli et al. 2012). This, along with the dense growth, explain how Gleichenella View in CoL (and other fern thickets) inhibits the establishment of trees in open habitats ( Walker et al. 2010).
