Range: —Antilles; southern Mexico to Bolivia (BE, CO, LP, SC) and southeastern Brazil.
Ecology: —Very common; terrestrial in open, disturbed habitats, on forest edges, roadsides, often forming dense tangled masses, sometimes mixed with other species of Gleicheniaceae , perhaps the most aggressively colonizing species of the family in Bolivia; to 2400 m.
Notes: —This species and those of Dicranopteris are often glaucous abaxially. Geographically variable with respect to the density of the hairs on the leaf underside.
