Range: — Puerto Rico; Costa Rica; Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia (CO, LP, SC).

Ecology: —Locally common; open habitats in humid forests, along roads, on landslides, and near streams; (800) 1400–3250 m.

Notes: —May be confused with S. lechleri , which lacks darkened scales, and S. melanoblastus , which lacks pseudostipules and has sori nested among arachnoid scales.
