Range: —Hispaniola; Costa Rica to Venezuela and Bolivia (CO, LP, SC); central and eastern Brazil and eastern Paraguay.
Ecology: —Common; montane pastures and savannas, especially in burnt habitats; 800–3000 m.
Notes: —Varies considerably in size, with specimens from dry and sunny (and also perhaps from nutrient-poor) sites smaller, with more closely held branches, and more coriaceous segments with more strongly revolute margins. Formerly widely known as S. penniger (Mart.) Copel. (= Gleichenia pennigera (Mart.) T.Moore ), but that name is now known to apply to a different Brazilian species.
