TYPE LOCALITY: Jamaica, Pedro Cays, 80 km. south of Jamaica .

DISTRIBUTION: Caribbean Sea and Yucatan.

COMMENT: "Extinct since the early 1950's;" see Kenyon, 1977, J. Mammal., 58:98.

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I as Monachus spp. and U.S. ESA - Endangered as Monachus tropicalis .
