Diagnosis. Chimoptesis potosiana is related to C. chrysopyla Powell, 1964 from Pennsylvania, U.S.A., but C. potosiana has slenderer, more triangular socii and a few minute thorns in the terminal part of the aedeagus. The female genitalia of C. potosiana are similar to those of C. dentitia , but the signa of the former are unequally sized (compared to the similarly sized signa of C. dentitia ), and the cingulum is weak. In facies potosiana is distinguished by a brown, complete median fascia.

Description. Wing span 18 mm. Male: Head cream, thorax darker, labial palpus with brownish lateroterminal part. Forewing shape typical of genus, termen not oblique, slightly concave. Ground colour and costal strigulae yellowish cream; divisions brown; ocellus marked dark brown especially towards costa. Dorsobasal blotch and median fascia pale brown. Forewing maculation variable, with some pale specimens, and one with brown markings. Cilia brownish cream. Hindwing whitish, brownish in distal part; cilia whitish. Genitalia ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ) with uncus broad, short; socius broad, weakly tapering terminally with dorsoposterior group of hairs; basal part of valva broad, neck slender, ventral incision deep; sacculus angulate; cucullus elongate-oval.

Female: Head and thorax as in male. Genitalia ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 13 – 19 ) with papillae anales and apophyses slender; postostial sterigma weakly concave posteriorly; folds of subgenital sternite weakly concave; cingulum weak; signa moderately large, unequal in size.

Holotype male: " Mexico, N[uevo]L[eon], C[erro] Potosí, 2800 m, 26.VI.1997, V.O. Becker Col; Col. Becker 110433 "; GS 1362 WZ. Two male and two female paratypes with identical label data; female with GS 1361 WZ.
