Metaparia guatemalensis ( Jacoby, 1881) ( Figs. 2c View Fig , 14–19 View Figs )

Spintherophyta guatemalensis Jacoby 1881: 123 . Spintherophyta guatemalensis : Lefèvre 1885: 6. Metaparia guatemalensis : Flowers 1996: 41

[species transferred to Metaparia View in CoL ].

Type Specimens. Lectotype here designated, male pinned to a card: labeled “S./Geronimo/Champion [handwritten]// Spintherophyta /guatemalense/Jac. [handwritten]//Jacoby 2 nd /Coll.//Type./9358 [red label]”; deposited in the MCZ. Paralectotypes here designated, 2 males and 4 females individually card-mounted and 1 male and 1 female mounted on the same card: labeled “ S. Geronimo,/ Guatemala./ Champion.//B.A.C./123. 4.// SYN- /TYPE [circular label with blue outline]” ; 1 male and 1 female mounted on the same card: labeled “ S. Geronimo,/ Guatemala./ Champion.//B.A.C./123. 4.// Spintherophyta / guatemalense [handwritten]// SYN- /TYPE [circular label with blue outline]// SYN- /TYPE [circular label with blue outline]” ; 1 male, card-mounted:labeled “ S. Geronimo,/ Guatemala,/Champion.//B.C.A./123.4.//4. Spintherophyta guatemalensis .// SYN- /TYPE [circular label with blue outline]” ; 2 males and 3 females, individually card-mounted: labeled “ Costa Rica./V. Patten.//B.C.A.//123. 4.// SYN- /TYPE [circular label with blue outline]”; all paralectotypes deposited in the BMNH .

Redescription. Form ovate; sides subparallel; dorsum convex; elytral apex broadly rounded ( Figs. 14, 15 View Figs ). Length 2.82–3.54 mm (males) or 3.16–3.70 mm (females). Width 1.95–2.43 mm (males) or 2.11–2.54 mm (females). Dorsum shining, rose colored, or dark, almost black, with green-gold and pink sheen; venter dark brown to black with metallic green sheen. Head: IOR 2.32–2.76 (males) or 2.00– 2.53 (females). Frons punctate-setose, with space between punctures microsculptured; punctures medium, moderately dense to dense, stretched medially on outer 1/3; setae short. Clypeus trapezoidal (male) or rectangular (female), gradually narrowing in apical 1/4; punctate-setose, with space between punctures microsculptured; punctures medium and dense, coarse; apical setae longer; apex emarginate; emargination weakly M-shaped to trapezoidal (male) or broadly triangular (female) ( Fig. 16 View Figs ). Labrum dark blue-black, metallic.Antennomeres 1–6 light brown; antennomere 1 rectangular (males) or globular (females); antennomeres 7–10 almost square; antennomere 11 with 2 small pits apically. Mandibles enlarged, strongly convex, bulbous basally (male), not enlarged, less convex basally (female), bent ca. 45°, base colored like dorsum, apex red-brown. Mandible lateral face sparsely setose, basal half rugulose, apical half smooth, narrower than base. Mandible dorsal face smooth, inner edge of right and left mandible with short tooth (male), low ridge along outer basal edge. Pronotum: Pronotal ratio 0.49–0.52 (males) or 0.50–0.56 (females). Disc punctate, glabrous, except anteriolaterally punctate-setose, space between punctures smooth medially and microsculptured laterally; punctures medium and dense; setae short.Anterior edge broadly, shallowly emarginate, setose; setae directed anteriorly. Sides evenly rounded. Posterior edge margined with lip. Anterior corners deflexed. Scutellar shield: Form pentagonal to broadly triangular, corners rounded, anterior edge triangularly concave. Disc smooth, shining. Elytra: Disc punctate-striate, glabrous, space between punctures smooth, shining; punctures large and dense basally, smaller and less distinct apically; striae geminate basally, single apically. Costae sublaterally from basal calli to apex and in apical 1/4–1/3 between striae 1–3; costae end in umbone apically. Basal calli smooth, shining. Elytral suture produced as short point apically (female) or not produced (male). Venter: Prosternal lateral arms with anterior edge weakly convex, margined with bead, tapering dorsally, connecting with pronotal anterior edge, disc microsculptured, sparsely setose ( Fig. 2c View Fig ). Prosternum anterior edge flat to weakly convex, sides concave in anterior 3/4, straight in posterior 1/4, posterior edge weakly concave, disc rugulose, sparsely setose, edges margined with bead. Mesoventrite posterior edge strongly convex medially. Legs: Pale brown with green sheen (males) or dark red-brown with green sheen (females). Trochanters with primary seta. Protibia apex slanted, outer lateral face slightly longer. Aedeagus: Median lobe subequal in length to basal hood, sclerotization around endophallic opening thick apically, anteriolateral corners straight, not rounded, apex upturned, emarginate; emargination broad, shallow arch ( Figs. 18, 19 View Figs ). Spermatheca: Form weakly W-shaped; base elongate, bulbous; apex weakly enlarged ( Fig. 17 View Figs ).

Diagnosis. Metaparia guatemalensis is most similar to M. lesueuri because of the general form and color of the body and unique clypeal emargination. The two are separated by the bulbous male mandibles, longer antennae, microsculptured anterior pronotal corners, straight to weakly concave prosternal posterior margin, and sculpturing on the elytral apex in M. guatemalensis . Metaparia guatemalensis is distinguished from all other species of Metaparia by the bulbous male mandibles and trapezoidal to M-shaped clypeal emargination.

Specimens Examined. 15 specimens deposited in the BMNH, BYU, and NMNH. GUATEMALA: Zacapa: road to San Lorenzo (1 BYU) . Guatemala (10 NMNH) . MEXICO: Chiapas: State of Chiapas (3 BMNH) . No locality: (1 BMNH) .

Distribution. Costa Rica, Guatemala (Zacapa), Mexico (Chiapas) ( Fig. 70 View Figs ).

Temporal Occurrence. January, October.

Remarks. In his description, Jacoby (1881) did not designate a type or state the number of specimens he examined. It is clear from the description that he viewed multiple specimens, specimens of both sexes, and specimens from two locations, “ Hab. GUATEMALA, San Gerónimo (Champion)” and “ COSTA RICA (van Patten)”. We can find no published record validating the type designations, so we chose the specimen from the MCZ as the lectotype because it is the only syntype not card-mounted and with all characters easily visible. The remaining syntypes in the BMNH are designat- ed as paralectotypes.
