♀♂. Head ( Figs 8, 9 View FIGURES 6 – 10 ) 1.7–1.8 times as wide as long; vertex in dorsal view evenly rounded; occiput impunctate and polished; vertex and gena evenly and weakly punctate; interocellar area polished, finely and rather more sparsely punctate than vertex; geno-orbital index 2.2–3.1; frons impunctate and finely coriaceous, with a weak median longitudinal groove; inner margins of eyes weakly convergent ventrally; face 1.3–1.5 times as wide as long, rather more strongly punctate than vertex; supraclypeal suture distinct; clypeus 2.1–2.5 times as wide as long, rather more sparsely punctate than face, with apical margin truncate and medially emarginate; antenna with 45–52 flagellomeres, 1st flagellomere 1.3–1.5 times as long as 2nd, 2nd 2.4–2.6 times as long as wide.

Mesosoma ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 6 – 10 ): mesoscutum 1.2–1.3 times as long as wide, with or without median weakly raised line; scutellum 1.4–1.6 times as long as distance between lateral carinae at its base, lateral carina fading out beyond middle of scutellum; propodeum trans-striate on median portion, with sublateral crest present.

Fore tibial spur 0.4–0.5 times as long as 1st tarsomere, which is 9.1–11.0 times as long as wide; fore tarsal claw with 13–15 (♀) and 19–25 (♂) pectines; hind tarsal claw with 12–15 pectines.

Fore wing ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11 – 12 ) 2.9–3.2 times as long as wide; areolet pointed or petiolate above; cu-a opposite or distad Rs&M by 1/11–1/10 of cu-a length, slightly curved or almost straight, vertical, slightly reclivous or slightly inclivous; hind wing ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 11 – 12 ) with 6–9 distal hamuli; nervellar index 0.4–0.5.

Metasoma with 1st tergum 2.3–2.8 times as long as apical width and 1.3–1.5 times as long as 2nd; male subgenital plate ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 13 – 18 ) short with apical margin moderately convex; paramere ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 13 – 18 ) subelliptic, with apical portions of dorsal and ventral margins slightly emarginate; hairs on lamina volsellaris weak and sparse; apex of digitus truncate with coners rounded, without teeth; median portion of membrane of median surface with weakly papillate area, area not sclerotized; pad semicircular and situated at apical 1/6 of paramere in middle; median subapical sclerotized plate transverse, not produced to form an overhang; penis valve ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 13 – 18 ) broad, somewhat broadened toward apex, with subapical portion strongly curved ventrally; basal apodeme of aedeagus strongly curved dorsally.

Head yellow; occiput and antenna reddish-yellow. Mesosoma brownish-yellow to reddish-brown; mesoscutum with reddish-brown to brown stripes on each of median and lateral lobes; anterior and posterior margins of mesopleuron yellowish. Legs reddish-yellow. Wings hyaline; vein C and pterostigma of fore wing slightly brownish-yellow, other veins brown. Metasoma reddish yellow to reddish-brown.

Ovarian egg 0.8 mm long and 0.3–0.4 mm high, with a stalk on caudal end.

Length of fore wing: 10.8–16.1 mm.

Distribution. Japan (Honshu, Kyushu), widespread across the Palearctic region.

Remarks. This species is the only member of the cristata group in Japan and can be distinguished from other Japanese species of Bessobates by the reddish body color, besides the characters of the species group.
