1. Platypleura dinagatensis Lee View in CoL sp. nov.

( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 )

Type material. Holotype: male, Dinagat, southwestern slopes of Mt. Kanbinlio, 748 m, 10°22.639’N 125°38.095’E, 3 VII 2010, K.B.R. Hill, D.C. Marshall, J. Jones, & D. Mohagan, with voucher label 10. PH. DI.RED.07 (collected in slightly teneral condition).

Etymology. The new species is named after the type locality, Dinagat.

Measurements of type (n = 1 male). Length of body: 18.9. Length of head and thorax together: 11.0. Length of abdomen: 7.9. Width of head including eyes: 9.4. Width of mesonotum: 8.7. Length of forewing: 30.0. Width of forewing: 10.0. Wing span: 68.9.

Description of male ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ). Head castaneous with the following black marks: large median spot enclosing ocelli, with its posterior end reaching posterior margin of head; a pair of small longitudinal fasciae between lateral ocelli and eyes; a pair of small oblique fasciae between postclypeus and eyes; a pair of narrow fascia along eyes. Distance between lateral ocelli and eyes about twice as wide as distance between lateral ocelli. Antenna ochraceous but pedicel and scape black. Postclypeus not swollen; with a median longitudinal fascia and nine transverse fasciae between anterior transverse grooves. Anteclypeus castaneous to dark brown but black posterolaterally. Rostrum black apically; reaching posterior margin of sternite III. Lorum fuscous. Gena with a transverse patch between postclypeus and posterior part of eye, touching postclypeus but not touching eye.

Thorax: Inner area of pronotum light castaneous with median longitudinal narrow black fascia broadened at posterior end and indistinct grayish marks along paramedian fissures, lateral fissures, and lateral margins of inner area. Pronotal collar brown to castaneous with darkened lateral parts. Lateral pronotal collar broadly developed and roundly angulated with an angle of 100–110 degree. Mesonotum castaneous with the following black marks: large median triangular mark, with its posterior margin reaching anterior margin of cruciform elevation, and with its lateral corners enclosing scutal depressions; a pair of large semicircular spots on submedian sigilla; a pair of longitudinal broad fasciae on lateral sigilla, with their anterior ends reaching anterior margin of mesonotum. Cruciform elevation greenish ochraceous. Thoracic sternites smoky ochraceous. Legs ochraceous. Fore- and midtarsi mostly dark brown. Hind metatarsus and mesotarsus mostly dark brown. Fore-, mid-, and hind pretarsal claws mostly dark brown to fuscous.

Wings: Forewing with slightly outwardly curved (not straight or linear) outer margin; venation reddish orange; furnished with cloudy pattern of infuscations on about basal three-fifths (up to about basal half of ulnar cell 2); hyaline on remaining part (about apical two-fifths), with infuscations on around bases of apical cells 1–4 and with irregular groups of fuscous spots arranged along apical margins of longitudinal veins (radius anterior 2 vein through median 4 vein). Basal membrane dark gray. Hind wing fuscous except outer marginal area and minute apical portion of each of apical cells 2–5. Anal cell 2 whitish except hyaline outer margin and grayish inner margins. Hind wing jugum gray.

Operculum ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 C) mostly fuscous except smoky ochraceous lateral part; semicircular, transversely wide; short, extending slightly beyond posterior margin of sternite II. Opercula slightly overlapping medially.

Abdomen obconical in dorsal view, short, much shorter than head and thorax together; mostly black with light green caudal margin on each of tergites 3–6. Timbal cover smoky brown posteriorly and light brown anteriorly; semicircular, wider than long. Timbal concealed by timbal cover in dorsal and lateral views. Abdominal sternites mostly fuscous with reddish ochraceous caudal margin on each of sternites III–VI.

Genitalia: Pygofer ellipsoidal with acuminate apex (wide dorsal beak) in ventral view. Uncus simple, not bifurcate, with apical margin rounded. Aedeagus cylindrical, not tapering down to apex.

Remarks. This species is similar to Platypleura elizabethae Lee, 2009 from Palawan and Mindanao but is distinguished by the following characteristics: rostrum long, reaching posterior margin of sternite III [slightly passing median part of posterior margin of opercula in P. elizabethae ]; forewing with wider and darker cloudy pattern of infuscations; forewing with central white spot across ulnar cell 3 and medial cell [without central white spot in P. elizabethae ]; hind wing with wider infuscation covering entire hind wing except hyaline marginal area and minute clearing on apices of apical cells 2–4; hind wing anal cell 2 (vannus) with reduced infuscation, with apical half being hyaline. Platypleura elizabethae from Mindanao has some differences in the forewing patterns, i.e. broader cloudy pattern of infuscations on the inner half of the forewing and broader infuscation on the anal cell 2 (vannus) than the specimens from Palawan, as Lee (2010a) indicated, and probably the population on Mindanao represents an independent species. This matter will be followed up in future studies.
