Proarna grisea ( Fabricius, 1775) View in CoL

[ Tettigonia] grisea Fabricius 1775: 678 View in CoL (America).

Remarks. The reference of the species inhabiting the West Indies is in Metcalf (1963a). There are two references to the species inhabiting “Americae insulis” ( Fabricius 1781) or “insulis America” ( Gmelin 1789) in the historic literature. There is a distinct possibility that the specimen was misidentified or mislabeled as the reference in Fabricius (1781) is immediately after reference to the North American species now classified as Megatibicen grossus ( Fabricius, 1775) ( Sanborn 2023b) inhabiting Brazil. Because there is no specific information from which island in “America” the specimen supposedly originated, there is no way to determine that the species is part of the Lesser Antilles cicada fauna and the species is considered not to have been a part of the fauna.

Distribution. The species has been reported from Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, South America, Venezuela, and the West Indies ( Metcalf 1963a; Sanborn 2013, 2020a, c; 2023a).
