Larval specimens studied. 4 exx. (immature instar), “Mahua water fall, Crocker Range, 6.V.2010, H. Yoshitomi leg.”

Diagnosis. Body is oval, relatively small and very convex. Majority of studied specimens have contrasting orange spots on black elytra. Dorsal metatibial spurs of males are modified – curved and hooked apically. The species is similar to E. ceylonicus sp. nov., but the dorsal pattern is orange and present only in anterior portion of elytra. Genitalia similar to E. picturatus , but differ in details of sternite 9, parameres and slightly wider prehensor. Well distinguishable also on the basis of morphology of dorsal metatibial spur of males.

Description. Holotype, male. Body hemispherical, TL/EW 1.1, convex, covered with yellow suberect setae. Head black with slightly lighter anterior margin of clypeus, pronotum black, elytra with pattern consisting of adscutellar and humeral orange spots. Posterior portion of elytra black. Legs light brown. Mouthparts brownish, proximal antennomeres yellowish, darkening distally.

Head with distinct punctation, punctures separated by ca. 1.0 diameter. Eyes big, protuberant; head 1.8 X wider than interocular space. Antennae filiform, reaching basal 1/3 of elytra. Antennomere 1 cylindrical, curved, antennomere 2 short, globular, antennomere 3 distinctly longer than antennomere 2, narrow, antennomere 4–10 1.5 X longer than antennomere 3, apical antennomere ca. 1.5 X longer than preapical one. Palpomeres of maxillary palpi moderately wide.

Pronotum small, slightly convex, covered with distinct punctation, punctures separated by 1.0–1.5 diameters, anterolateral corners almost rectangular, somewhat obtuse, projecting anteriorly; lateral margins straight; posterolateral corners acute; base of pronotum subtrapezoidal, with complete margination along basal margin; PW/PL 2.9. Scutellum relatively big, punctured as on pronotum, equilaterally triangular. Angle between pronotum and elytra not marked in dorsal outline.

Elytra oval, with distinctly explanate lateral margins, widest in the middle, punctation stronger than on pronotum, punctures separated by 1.0–1.5 diameters; humeri well marked; EL/EW 1.0; EL/PL 4.8; EW/PW 1.7.

Legs moderately long. Hind tibial spurs well developed, dorsal one elongated and modified – straight, apical half slightly widened and hooked at apex, 0.8 X as long as tarsomere 1 and only slightly longer than ventral spur. Ventral spur distinctly curved.

Longitudinal ridge on ventrite 1 present in basal portion. Apex of ventrite 5 with wide and deep emargination. Apex of tergite 7 unmodified.

Sternite 9 (L 0.63, W 0.28) subtriangular, apodemes fused basally, apex deeply emarginated, with a few apical setae and small projection pointing inwardly. Tergite 8 (L 1.10, W 0.57) moderately sclerotized, apical portion small, deeply and narrowly emarginated, with arcuate apex, bearing row of short setae on apical margin, with a pair of very long apodemes diverging basally; tergite 9 (L 0.80, W 0.60) moderately sclerotized, apical portion small, with minute setae at apex, with a pair of long apodemes strongly diverging basally. Tegmen (L 0.65, W 0.60) well sclerotized, parameres straight, widening apically, apices with 2 small denticles on inner margin, mesal process very narrow and short, much shorter than parameres. Penis (L 0.47, W 0.09) small, moderately sclerotized, pala very narrow and elongate, parameroids as long as pala, apical process slightly shorter than pala.

Female. Dorsal pattern less contrasting than in males, no uniformly colored specimens of females are known. Prehensor tubular, straight, moderately long, relatively narrow.

Variability. TL/EW males: 1.1–1.2 (1.1), TL/EW females: 1.2. Dorsal pattern very variable – elytra from uniformly black to black with distinct pattern consisting of spots situated in basal portion of elytra (one adscutellar and one humeral macula on each elytron), in some specimens indistinct lighter area is present in adsutural portion of posterior half of elytra.

Measurements. Males (n = 6): TL 2.80–3.55 (3.21), PL 0.50–0.65 (0.59), PW 1.55–2.00 (1.77), EL 2.55– 3.15 (2.88), EW 2.40–3.10 (2.82). Females (n = 6): TL 2.95–3.30 (3.12), PL 0.50–0.60 (0.57), PW 1.58–1.75 (1.69), EL 2.60–2.95 (2.78), EW 2.45–2.70 (2.57).

Distribution. Borneo.

Bology. Larvae develop in phytotelmata ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ).

Etymology. The species is named after Dr. Haruo Takizawa, who is an excellent taxonomist of Chrysomelidae and collector of the holotype.
