Limnochares aquatica ( Linnaeus, 1758)

Synonyms: Acarus aquaticus Linnaeus, 1758 (original designation); Acarus holosericus De Geer, 1778 ; Limnochares holosericea (De Geer, 1778)

Type material: Unknown, possibly lost.

Type locality: Europe ( Linnaeus 1758).

Geographical distribution: Holarctic ( Davids et al. 2006).

Distribution in Portugal: Centre: Beira Alta, Serra da Estrela-Lagoa da Torre ( Davids et al. 2005), Vilar Formoso- Côa River ( Lundblad 1956); South: Alentejo( Valdecasas 1988), in Guadiana River-between Serpa and Beja municipalities ( Lundblad 1956).

Ecological notes: Freshwater ( Linnaeus 1758), in slow-flowing and stagnant waters ( Pešić 1999), often on riparian vegetation, decaying wood and leaf litter; Larval insects hosts: adults and larvae of Heteroptera and adults of Odonata ( Davids et al. 2006). Found also in clear waters, present in Myriophyllum spp. and Juncus spp. ( Lundblad 1956) .
